Discover how Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo were able to influence composer Andrea Datzman in ‘Inside Out 2’
In ‘Inside Out 2’, it becomes clear how much Riley’s mind has changed between the events of the first and second films in the franchise, since after the girl’s 13th birthday, the control room where all her emotions live and the Personality Islands, which are the areas where all the core memories that help shape her personality are stored, are altered.
Among the changes in the Personality Islands, it is possible to notice the arrival of new islands, such as the Tragic Vampire Romance Island and the Boy Band Island, where the first clues of Riley’s taste for art and entertainment appear, which are later confirmed, as it is revealed that ‘Get Up and Glow’ is the favorite fictional band of Riley and her two best friends, Bree and Grace.
However, Riley’s favorite band could actually be another, as explained by the composer Andrea Datzmanwho became the first female composer to work on a Pixar feature film, she imagined that the character would have preferences for girl groups and big pop singers of today like Taylor Swift It is Olivia Rodrigo.
The revelation came in a chat with the portal Colliderwhere Datzman she told what the sound inspirations were for the sequence, mentioning that rock, in general, was widely used to create effects for the plot, leading the interviewer to ask if, taking the genre into consideration, she had thought about what Riley’s favorite band would be.
In response, she said that her references were different:
I was thinking, ‘Well, she [Riley] “She probably loves a little bit of Olivia Rodrigo.’ Maybe not at that moment, since Get Up and Glow is her favorite band right off the bat. Maybe it’s a little bit more of a girl group thing. I’m going to be dating myself too much if I say any of the girl groups I’m thinking of, but I was thinking of Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift and a few of those. I have a 14-year-old niece, and I was just checking in with her all the time: ‘What are you into right now? What’s going on?'”
Finally, she detailed how all of these artists served as learning and influences for the film: “What I learned a lot from it, though, was great mixing techniques, getting that really wide bass sound and high treble, like bright highs, which seems to open up a lot of room for an emotional experience in the middle, I think.”
