Check out some of the films that had the worst box office sales in the history of Disney Studios, founded 100 years ago by Walt Disney
Over the years, Disney has managed to establish itself as one of the main powers in the global film industry, occupying the top of the list of highest-grossing films in cinema with films that are part of The Walt Disney Company’s catalog.
However, despite being successful for 100 years, the studio doesn’t always get it right. Throughout its history, the company has had some productions that didn’t receive the expected success and ended up causing losses for the business.
With that in mind, RECREIO has put together a list of Disney’s five worst box office hits. Check it out!
5. “Red” (2022)
With a budget of $175 million, according to data reported by Collider, “Red” only earned the studio around $21.8 million. This is because, initially, the film was only released on streaming — something that, naturally, does not yield much return. The film, however, even received a re-release in theaters in 2024, but it did not generate much result in its final revenue.
4. “Strange World” (2022)

Released in 2022, the animated film “Weird World” had a budget of US$ 180 million, but grossed only US$ 73.6 million at the worldwide box office. The plot, in general, ended up not attracting much attention from the public, in addition to its premiere in theaters coinciding with another highly anticipated release at the time: “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.
3. “Indiana Jones and the Relic of Destiny” (2023)

Marking the return of the famous “Indiana Jones” franchise, the film “Indiana Jones and the Relic of Destiny” had a grand budget of US$ 387.2 million, but ended up grossing only around US$ 383.9 million at the worldwide box office. Despite the huge investment, the production ended up not pleasing the public, in addition to receiving average reviews from film experts.
2. “Haunted Mansion” (2023)

Inspired by one of the most classic attractions at Disney parks, “The Haunted Mansion” had an investment of US$ 150 million and a return of US$ 117.5 million at the worldwide box office. According to Collider, the main reason for the film’s failure was its release date, since, in addition to having premiered far from Halloween, a time when the theme presented in the film would be popular, the production hit theaters in the same week as two of the year’s biggest releases: “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”.
1. “The Marvels” (2023)

“The Marvels”, a film that brings together Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), had a budget of $274.8 million, but grossed only $206.1 million at the worldwide box office. As Collider points out, since the end of Phase 4, Marvel has faced problems at the box office, and “The Marvels” failed to attract audiences’ attention, receiving mixed reviews.
