What is the chronological order to watch the ‘Ice Age’ franchise?

Between feature films and short films, the ‘Ice Age’ franchise has more than 10 titles; see how to watch them in chronological order!

Launched in 2002, the ‘Ice Age’ franchise has six feature films and eight shorts to follow the adventures experienced by the woolly mammoth Manny and his two best friends, the saber-toothed tiger Diego and the sloth named Sid, during the glacial period, as well as the misadventures of Scrat, a squirrel whose only desire — constantly frustrated — is to enjoy his beloved nut.

The titles were released over 20 years, so RECREIO has compiled a list below in chronological order to follow all the ‘Ice Age’ films; check it out!

FEATURE FILMS

1. Ice Age (2002)

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, the film that begins the group of friends’ journey on the big screen was directed by Chris Wedgein addition to production by Blue Sky Studios and distribution by 20th Century Fox Animation.

Synopsis: “A group of prehistoric animals band together to save a human baby. The misfit herd becomes the only hope for the future in this delightful animation.”

2. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (2006)

The second film in the franchise featured a Brazilian in the production: Carlos Saldanha (Rio), who was chosen as director.

Synopsis: “Sequel to the hit “Ice Age”, bringing back Diego, Manny and Sid. Now they face the end of the ice age, when everything is melting. The destruction is dangerous and they must be careful and warn everyone about the situation.”

3. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)

Also commanded by Carlos Saldanha‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs’ is responsible for introducing the one-eyed weasel named Buck, a character who later gained prominence in a film named after him.

Synopsis: “Manny and the gang discover a lost world with fierce and funny dinosaurs. Meanwhile, Scrat goes crazy over the beautiful Scratte, but is she trying to win his heart, or steal his nut?”

4. Ice Age 4 (2012)

From 2016, ‘Ice Age: The Big Bang’ had Mike Thurmeier as director. The film features Scrat again as the cause of an action that changes the world forever.

Synopsis: “Scrat’s relentless pursuit of the acorn unintentionally causes a space accident, and a series of cosmic events transform and threaten the Ice Age world. To survive, Sid, Manny, Diego and the rest of the herd set off on a journey full of laughter and adventure, traveling to exotic lands and meeting a host of eccentric characters.”

6. Ice Age: Buck Wild (2022)

The first film to feature Disney as producer and distributor, ‘Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild’ was also marked by the debut of John C. Donkin as a feature film director.

Synopsis: “”Ice Age: The Adventures of Buck” continues the hilarious antics of everyone’s favorite prehistoric mammals. Eager to get away from their older sister Ellie, thrill-seeking possums Crash and Eddie set out to find their own space, but soon find themselves trapped in a massive underground cavern. They are rescued by their one-eyed, adventurous, dinosaur-hunting friend, the weasel Buck Wild, and together they must face the rebellious dinosaurs that inhabit the Lost World.”

SHORT FILMS

1. Gone Nutty (2002)

Released in the United States, ‘Gone Nutty’ follows Scrat as he attempts to fit his precious nut into a tree shell with a huge amount of nuts he has already collected. But an incident causes him to lose all of the nuts and begins the process of separating the continents.

2. No Time For Nuts (2006)

Nominated for the 2007 Oscar in the category of best animated short film, ‘No Time For Nuts’ follows Scrat after the clumsy squirrel finds a time machine, causing him to be transported to various eras in search of the nut.

3. Surviving Sid (2008)

Sid the sloth is the guide for a group of children who are camping. In the story, the character is not very good with the children and ends up putting them in several risky situations, until he is intervened.

4. Scrat In Love (2009)

Scrat is once again after his dream nut. However, while chasing the seed, he ends up meeting a female squirrel who exudes seduction, leaving Scrat with a big doubt: will he choose love or survival?

5. Scrat’s Continental Crack-Up (2012)

Playing once again with the division of continents, ‘Scrat’s Continental Crack-Up’ follows Scrat trying to fix his nut in the ice without the entire world suffering from his survival instinct.

6. Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe (2015)

In ‘Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe’ Scrat’s pursuit of his nut ends up bringing an unimaginable consequence, after all, he ends up being sent into space!

Still in space, Scrat must retrieve his nut and return home before he ends up captured by aliens.

8. The Last Adventure of Scrat (2022)

‘The Last Adventure of Scrat’ is the last animated film in the franchise produced by Blue Sky Studios and shows Scrat finally being able to enjoy the nut he has been chasing for so long.
