During the film, the original emotions, Joy, Fear, Disgust, Anger and Sadness, end up being trapped in a jar and sent to the back of Riley’s mind by Anxiety, who thought that Joy was ruining the girl’s experience at hockey camp, and gets rid of them, taking over the girl’s control center.
Still trapped, the five emotions are then sent to a safe, where the girl’s biggest secrets are locked, including Lance Stash Slashblade, the video game character that the young girl has a secret crush on, the duo Bloofy and Pouchy, characters from a children’s cartoon that Riley still secretly likes, and the Deep Dark Secret, which is not revealed.
The truth behind the Deep Dark Secret remains a great mystery throughout the duration of the film, and is only revealed in the last post-credit scene, shown after all the credits of the film, moments before the theater lights come on.
The Deep Dark Secret
In the scene, Joy returns to the vault with the intention of releasing the Deep Dark Secret, and questions him about what he is hiding that is so horrifying. In response, he says with great fear that the terrible memory he keeps is of when Riley burned the carpet at home.
Alegria ends up laughing at the revelation, and says that she thought the secret was about something else. For her, the “terrible” memory that would be hidden by Deep Dark Secret would be when the girl ended up peeing in the pool.
The character, who seemed to not remember this memory, ends up feeling very embarrassed and starts crying, locking himself in the safe again.
