Why does Nostalgia look like an old woman?

Through Instagram, Pixar’s character designer explained the details behind the creation of Nostalgia, the new emotion in ‘Inside Out 2’

On June 20th, the long-awaited animation “Inside Out 2” hit theaters. It is the latest film from Disney and Pixar that takes us back into the mind of young Riley who, with the arrival of adolescence, begins to face countless changes, including the arrival of new emotions. Check out the trailer!

Now, in addition to Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear and Disgust, the girl’s control center will also be occupied by Shame, Envy, Boredom and Anxiety, who end up imprisoning the original emotions and taking over the commands after an idea from Anxiety, trying to transform Riley into a new person.

However, something that ended up surprising the public was the appearance of a surprise emotion: Nostalgia, represented as the figure of an old lady who always remembers the “good mornings” and, despite not having a great importance in the plot, ended up winning over fans for her cuteness.

Through Instagram, Crystal Kunga character designer at Pixar, shared some early sketches of Nostalgia, as well as explaining why the team of animators decided to design her as an elderly lady.

“The idea of Nostalgia is that it needs to feel like a ‘warm hug.’ Our amazing lead modeler, Nancy Tsang, came up with the idea of a cute grandma wrapped in soft blankets. We think this is probably the universal idea of what the feeling of warmth, embrace, and home feels like,” Kung said in the caption.

Crystal He continues his explanation by saying: “I tried different hairstyles and glasses on her, and let her hold different things. In the end, we decided that she will be a fluffy white-haired grandma with pink glasses, wearing a blanket and warm, fluffy slippers, stirring her tea and wondering about the control center.”

“Inside Out 2” is showing in cinemas across Brazil.
