These New Portraits of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Will Make the Windsors Angry

Two works by Welsh artist Dan Llywelyn Hall, which depict the Sussexes as “challenged and marginalized figures in the royal family”, risk sparking a dust-up in the English royal family.

They spend happy days in the Montecito sun. However, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are regularly talked about away from London. This time for two new portraits featuring them as “historical royal faces” by Welsh artist Dan Llywelyn Hall, who had already created a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. Items to be auctioned on July 4th. On the occasion of the new exhibition ‘The Reign’ at Burlington House, London.

In these pictures, the Duke of Sussex is depicted as Charles Edward Stuart, known as “Prince Charlie of Bonn” and a “late 18th-century pretender to the throne,” notes: HuffPost: . His wife Meghan, meanwhile, is pictured as ‘Lady Elizabeth Grey’, Queen of England by marriage.

“Contested and Marginalized Figures of the Royal Family”

In an interview with Dan Llywelyn Hall on the BBC’s Radio Wales Breakfast show, Hall explained that he “felt these characters on the razor’s edge of public opinion were perfect for drawing comparisons with distant monarchs”. The artist justifies his gesture. “In Harry’s case, I entered the story before he met Meghan, a young party boy whose future is at stake, a bit like Prince Bonnie, who I compared him to.”

If Dan Llywelyn Hall draws a parallel here between Harry and Prince Charlie of Bonn, it’s really because both are “challenged and marginalized royals”, adding: HuffPost:. For her part, Meghan Markle has been compared to “the Queen’s husband”, “probably the most influential outsider in royal history,” Dan Llywelyn Hall jokes to the BBC. It is enough to revive the tension that has existed within the Windsor clan for several years, and the crushing “Megxit” that took place in 2020 is evidence of this.
