“I’m what you’d call a reasonable shopper. I don’t have a shopping spree. I buy little and I buy well. I have been keeping fashion pieces for years without even basic wear. In my family, I was taught early on that it is better to find a nice brand of clothing once in a while and take good care of it than a chain of rags from fast fashion, poor quality and shameful production, both from a human and ecological perspective. Not having Beyoncé’s shopping budget, when I’m not buying second hand, I prefer sales periods to find a coveted item once or twice a year. I think about what I need and browse department stores or fancy e-commerce sites. Generally, I can find designer dresses, shoes or bags at affordable prices. Because those structures must be destroyed, especially in the last days of the sale. And when we take the time to dig around, we don’t necessarily end up with a pine green lamé dress eight times too big, but something we really like. Quest gives value to the price, gives a bit of preciousness. And after all, who doesn’t like to get a good deal?”

“What’s the point of organizing the sale period in 2024 as an exclusive, inexplicable thing, when in fact the sale happens 365 days a year? Between Black Friday, Christmas shopping marathons and private sales, consumers always have the opportunity to find “good deals” without waiting for sales to start. Not to mention fast fashion giants like Teemu and Shane, apps with dubious and aggressive marketing strategies that offer unlimited products every day of the year, ultra attractive promotions and prices that defy all competition… the planet and the workers; It is in this capitalist-based context that selling suddenly seems less attractive, even useless. Their only interest here would be to absolve the buyer who might see this as a legitimate reason to pull out their credit card.

Today there are other platforms, especially resale apps like Vinted or Leboncoin, where you can find new clothes at a lower price. Of course, they’re not perfect, as ordering a used item on Vinted obviously involves moving the items unless the package is hand-delivered. But at least it allows us to order a product that isn’t shipped from around the world and designed for us by little underpaid hands.”
