Why doesn’t Pixar release live-action remakes of its animations?

In a recent interview, filmmaker Pete Docter revealed the reason behind Pixar’s decision not to release live-action remakes. Find it out!

In recent years, Disney has invested heavily in live-action remakes of some of its most successful animations. Among the productions that have already received realistic versions are “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Lion King”, “Mulan”, “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin”.

In 2023, the studio also confirmed the live-action of Moana, one of its most recent princesses. The film will be starred by the newcomer Catherine Laga’aiain addition to also having Dwayne Johnson like Maui; John Tui playing Chief Tui, Moana’s father; Frankie Adams giving life to Sina, the protagonist’s mother; It is Rena Owen like Grandma Tala. The premiere date has not yet been revealed.

The live-action craze didn’t just affect Disney. Classic animations from other studios, such as “Three Too Many Spies”, “How to Train Your Dragon”, “Monster High”, “Dora the Explorer” and “Naruto”, also had realistic adaptations confirmed.

However, the curious thing is that, although numerous studios are embracing live-action adaptations, one famous company is reluctant to create new versions of its animations: Pixar.

No live action?

In an interview with Time magazine (via Collider) while promoting the newest film “Inside Out 2”, which premiered last week in Brazil, the director Pete Docterresponsible for other great Pixar hits, was asked about the possibility of the studio releasing live-action adaptations of its animations, giving the following answer:

“No, and it may torment me for saying this, but it kind of bothers me. I like to make films that are original and unique. To remake them, it’s not very interesting to me personally… A lot of what we create only works because because of the rules of the world [animado]. So if you see a human walking into a house that floats, your mind says, ‘Wait a second. raising the house?’ But if you have a cartoonist and he’s sitting at home, you say, ‘Okay, I’ll buy him.’ The worlds we build just don’t translate easily.”

Despite Pixar deciding not to invest in live-actions, the studio has decided to give sequels a chance. In addition to “Inside Out 2”, which has just opened and is already producing excellent results at the global box office, another confirmed sequel is “Toy Story 5”, which is scheduled to premiere in 2026.
