Madame Figaro. – What attracted you? Juliet in the spring ?
Izya Higelin. – I was moved by this family, the different relationships between the characters and the modesty between Juliet and her father. This film is sweet, funny and poetic, it has something gorgeously melancholic about it. It’s funny, this is the second time I play Noemi Lvovsky’s daughter in a movie. We should have the same temperament, and I like that we associate. I liked that the director Blandin Lenoir entrusted me with this seemingly inappropriate role of this quiet and brooding character, because in fact he is not so far from my personality. If I can give off a strong energy on stage, I also sometimes let myself get caught up in darker thoughts.
Juliet experiences a period of depression in the film. It’s a feeling who knows you ?
My generation being particularly anxious, I had no trouble acting out Juliet’s panic attacks…. But the amazing thing is that when I started making the film, I was coming out of depression myself, and to recreate this state while recovering was extremely enjoyable. Juliet’s melancholy is a feeling thirty-somethings know well (and we don’t even wonder how we’re doing), but I’m trying to get over it because I know it’s no way to live.
You say you were moved by the modesty between your character and his father. Have you experienced this with yourself, Jacques Higel? ?
When I was a kid, generally. My father and I were close and shared many things. Our relationship changed around my majority. I was starting to become a woman, left home, and it was nice to see my father a little lost in the face of these changes. I wasn’t his little girl anymore and he didn’t know how to talk to me anymore. It turns out that during this time I was anorexic for a while and she was overwhelmed by it. Fathers can be as deconstructed and very open as possible, but it is always difficult for them to see their daughter as a young woman, it necessarily escapes them. As for us, as we grow older, we must break the image of the living god father.

What did you inherit from your father that you would like to pass on to your son? ?
An infinite love of life (hence my intent to stop lust) and freedom. Above all, I like playing and singing, but I don’t want to sacrifice everything for my career. I don’t always take what’s offered to me, I’m not always available and I make sure I have time for my son, my family, my loved ones. I know how lucky I am to be able to do this, and my greatest freedom remains to cut myself off from the world and retire to Calvi, where my family lives, a group of acrobats I grew up with.
Are you a worried mother? ?
I was because my son was young and I was often afraid of doing something wrong. This feeling has faded away to give way to the guilt of sometimes having to leave him because of my demanding job. I was afraid that he would feel deprived, but I reassured myself by telling myself that some parents leave early and don’t come home from work until late at night. What matters is the love we give him (and there is no shortage of it), and the moments we live together are beautiful, strong, rich. And then I tell myself that she will go to a psychologist like everyone else to deal with her traumas and anxieties.
In the film, the family is bound by a secret. What is your relationship with lies? ?
Even if we’re leaning towards more truth, it’s pretty crazy to see how every family has their own secrets. There are malicious lies, but most often the stories are kept quiet to traumatize some or shame others. I also avoided conversations because I was too lazy to engage with topics. It’s not a big deal to avoid it, but free speech helps self-development. I also want to talk honestly with my son, because I consider it important to integrate them into our life with appropriate words. I think we should tell the truth.
Press:
And you, have you agreed to hear the truth? ?
I obviously appreciate the truth, but being damn sensitive, I still tend to take things way too seriously… The problem with artists is that we are very quick to give the impression that the whole world is against Us. (Is laughing.)
What are your projects? ?
I’m writing songs for a new album, but it’s taking my time. This summer I’ll be shooting Melissa Drygard’s next film with Lina Khoudry, Laura Phelpin, Mallory Vanek and Kenza Fortas, about the Amazon gang that robbed banks in the south of France in the 1990s. This is a role that must a priori look like me…!
