Discover what the Disney character was called in Brazil

See what was the first name Donald Duck received when his first comic book was translated into Portuguese

With a sailor outfit and an explosive temper, Donald Duck became one of the most beloved characters in the world, as well as one of the longest-lived in activity, as the character created by Walt Disneywho debuted in the short film “A Galinha Esperta” as part of the Silly Simphonies series, turns exactly 90 years old this Sunday, 9th.

With fun narratives where it is possible to see Donald’s misfortune being explored in the most diverse adventures on the big and small screen, in addition to the pages of comics and collectible objects, the character has maintained his popularity for almost 100 years because he is extremely complex and real, as stated Edenilson Rodriguestranslator of the character’s comics in Brazil, which ends up making the public identify and always return for new plots.

He is fun, his voice is very characteristic, and above all, he looks like everyone else since he is full of problems”, began analyzing Rodrigues in a statement to RECREIO. “In the comics, Donald Duck has problems with his girlfriend, he doesn’t have money… he’s ordinary! He is a character who is unlucky, earns little, works a lot, is responsible with his nephews and I think people identify with that. In the animations he is still a fun and hot-tempered character, but at the same time, he is kind… there are so many qualities that people end up identifying with in some way.”

In fact, in addition to having similar problems to humans, the duck became real after being inspired by the voice of an incredible professional who existed in the real world: the voice actor Clarence Nashwhich when heard by Walt Disney creating animal sounds on the radio was chosen to voice the studio’s talking duck in the early 1930s.

Even though he is an almost century-old character, what some may not imagine is that Donald arrived in Brazil with a different name when his first comic book landed on Brazilian soil — and he had little connection with the name by which he is world famous today.

Donald’s first name in Brazilian comics

The truth is that he was presented as Don Fernandinho or Pato Fernandinho in the Portuguese version of the translation of “A Galinha Esperta” from the Silly Simphonies series into comics, which in the United States was released in the same year as the homonymous animation, in 1934. .

Donald debuted in 1936 in Brazil, in a very rare magazine, and he wasn’t called Donald Duck, he was called Don Fernando and Don Fernandinho, since this was a rhyming comic”, Rivaldo Ribeiro told the press at the celebration event Donald Duck’s 90th birthday.

Here in Brazil, the adaptation in question debuted in 1936 through issue number 312 of Suplemento Juvenil, a youth magazine launched in 1934 by the pioneer of adventure comics in Brazil, Adolfo Aizen. The magazine brought the story exclusively and, on the page, it is marked with the title “A Singular Symphony by Walt Disney”.

Meanwhile, Donald’s real name was seen in Brazilian comics in issue No. 313 of the same magazine, which also marks the character’s first appearance alone in national strips before his official debut in the Brazilian publishing market with “Pato Donald”. , published by Editora Melhoramentos in 1943 and the magazine “O Pato Donald – number 01”, launched in 1950 by Editora Abril.

It is worth remembering that, even though he is known as Donald Duck in Brazil, this is also not the character’s full name. He actually has a middle name in the original English version, making Donald Fauntleroy Duck the way he was actually named.
