Ecce Homo is one of the greatest discoveries in the history of art, as there are only about 60 known works by Caravaggio.
A painting of Jesus Christ by Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio will be displayed at the Prado Museum in Madrid. It was reported by Reuters.
On Monday, the museum said it had reached an agreement with the new owner of the oil on canvas painting, an international collector living in Spain. They also add that Ecce Homo is one of the greatest discoveries in the history of art, as there are only about 60 known works by Caravaggio.
The painting was painted between 1605 and 1609 and is believed to have once belonged to the private collection of King Philip IV of Spain.
It depicts a biblical scene from the New Testament where Pontius Pilate presents Christ to the audience: blood flows from the forehead of the suffering Christ crowned with a crown of thorns.
Initially, the authorship of the painting was attributed to an unknown peer of the famous artist José de Ribery. In 2021, Spain blocked the sale of Ecce Homo at auction after experts suggested it might be the work of Michelangelo da Caravaggio.
The painting’s former owners have commissioned London and New York’s Colnaghi Gallery to investigate the painting’s authorship, return it and, if possible, sell it.
On Monday, El Prado said that the results of the investigation confirming the authorship of the Italian master painting will be published simultaneously with the unveiling of the painting on May 28.
It was previously reported that in Antwerp, Belgium, police found paintings by Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall in the basement of one of the houses.
