Before becoming one of the most beloved characters in animation, Olaf was almost discarded from the adventures of ‘Frozen’. Find out why!
Being one of Disney’s most popular and profitable franchises, nowadays, it is practically impossible to imagine the “Frozen” stories without Olaf, the adorable snowman who loves warm hugs. However, in the year 2022, the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation and co-director of the films about Elsa and Anna, Jennifer Leerevealed that the character was almost left out of the feature films.
As reported by the ScreenRant portal, during an interview with Variety magazine, Jennifer revealed that, after watching the first cut of “Frozen”, she was certain that Olaf needed to be cut from the story.
“My first note was, ‘kill the snowman,’” Lee revealed during the interview.
However, the beloved snowman ended up being saved thanks to a Disney animator who, even after instructions from the director, created a three-page script imagining the character being played by the actor. Josh Gad — and the plan could not have worked better, since Jennifer ended up surrendering to Olaf’s charms.
After the release of the first film, the entire world would also melt under the charms of the snowman, who became one of the studio’s most beloved characters.
Olaf became so famous that, in addition to returning for the sequel in 2019, he also won three short films focused on him: “Olaf in a Freezing Adventure” (2017), “Once Upon a Snowman” (2020) and “Olaf Presents ” (2021), where the snowman tells his own version of five Disney tales.
New movies
Now, Olaf is also expected to be back in the new “Frozen” films. This is because, at the beginning of 2023, Bob Igerthe current CEO of The Walt Disney Company, confirmed in an interview with Good Morning America that two new films in the franchise are in development.
“Frozen 3 is in development and perhaps there is a Frozen 4 in development as well. But I don’t have much to say about these films right now. But Jenn Lee, who created Frozen, the original and Frozen 2, is working hard with her team at Disney Animation on not one, but two stories,” said Iger.
