Why didn’t Disney adapt the other ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ books?

Have you ever wondered why film adaptations of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ were never released again? Find out why!

In 1950, the Irish author CS Lewis launched the first book in one of its most popular and profitable franchises, “The Chronicles of Narnia”. Entitled “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, the work was responsible for presenting the adventures of Pedro, Susana, Edmundo and Lúcia Pevensie, siblings who are transported directly to a magical world after entering a wardrobe.

In total, the saga has seven books, which have gained international notoriety and already have more than 120 million copies sold worldwide, translated into 47 languages.

It was so successful that, in the early 2000s, the story of CS Lewis he had three of his seven books adapted for film by Disney: “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005), “Prince Caspian” (2008) and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (2010).

However, since the release of the last film, a big question has arisen among fans. After all, why didn’t the other books receive adaptations?

Explanation

As reported by the TecMundo portal, despite the first feature being a great success, the other two films did not do as well at the box office as the first release. According to information from G1, in 2005, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” grossed around US$745 million, being the third biggest feature film of the year.

Meanwhile, in 2008, “Prince Caspian” managed to sell just $420 million worth of tickets around the world. In 2010, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” had an even smaller number, grossing just US$415 million.

The portal also states that the other determining reason for Disney and 20th Century Fox not to make any more adaptations of “The Chronicles of Narnia” would be the content of the other books, which would be too dense for the big screenrunning the risk of not being as well accepted by cinema audiences.

It is worth remembering that, in addition to the three adapted films, the other works that are part of the franchise are: “The Magician’s Nephew”, “The Silver Chair”, “The Horse and His Boy” and “The Last Battle”, the book responsible for presenting the final fate of the Pevensie brothers and Narnia.
