A survey carried out by a fan in 2014 may have revealed the curious last name of Elsa and Anna, protagonists of the ‘Frozen’ franchise
In 2013, Disney started one of its most popular and profitable franchises today: “Frozen”. The plot follows the adventures of sisters Elsa and Anna, who assume the throne of Arendelle after the death of their parents, and need to deal with magical mysteries that surround the family.
Although the films clearly explain issues related to Elsa’s powers and their origins, a simple detail about the sisters’ lives was never revealed. After all, what is their last name?
Fan-created theory
The curiosity can be answered through a theory shared by a fan in 2014 via Tumblr, where a very important historical period was taken into consideration: the time in which the story is set.
According to user PaulKellogg (via ScreenRant), to discover Elsa and Anna’s last name it is necessary to understand how society worked at the time in which the film takes place. According to analyzes made by fans, the Roman numerals present in the short “Frozen Fever” indicate that the production takes place between the years 1860 and 1870, in Norway.
Historians claim that, during this period, Norwegian families adopted patronymic surnames, that is, originating from the father’s name, followed by the suffixes -(s)datter or -(s)dotter, depending on the region and dialect.
On the other hand, it is also important to highlight that, in this same area, there was also an ancient Nordic tradition in which, instead of Scandinavian children adopting surnames originating from their father’s name, surnames originating from their mother’s name were used, followed by the same suffixes.
Therefore, the theory states that, taking into account that Elsa and Anna’s father was King Agnarr, and their mother was Queen Iduna, it is very possible that the princesses’ surname was Agnarrsdatter, or even Idunasdatter. However, unfortunately, the hypothesis was never confirmed by Disney.
