Hayao Miyazakidirector of “The Boy and the Crane”, did not attend the 2024 Oscar awards ceremony, which took place last Sunday, the 10th. The filmmaker’s absence caused a buzz on social media, mainly because the film was the big winner in the category for “Best Animated Film”.
To put an end to speculation, Studio Ghibli’s executive producer, Kiyofumi Nakajimaexplained the lack of Miyazaki it’s from Toshio Suzukipresident of the studio, at the ceremony.
“I would like to thank everyone who connected with the film. We would also like to apologize for the absence of our director, Hayao Miyazaki, and our producer, Toshio Suzuki, who were unable to be here today. Please forgive me, they are old,” revealed Kiyofumi Nakajima [via SoraNews].
It is worth remembering that Kiyofumi Nakajima was at the awards ceremony, and received the award on behalf of Hayao Miyazaki. After his speech, Toshio Suzukiwho worked as a producer for “The Boy and the Crane”, also commented on not being present at the delivery of the statuette, citing the fact that his age and Miyazaki be advanced, as they are 83 and 75 years old, respectively.
“Both Hayao Miyazaki and I have aged considerably. I am very grateful to receive such an honor at my age, and to receive this message to continue with my work. I will dedicate myself even more to work in the future. Thank you very much,” said Suzuki.
