5 changes in Disney princesses over the years

Over the years, some characteristics of Disney princess films ended up changing a lot. Check out some!

87 years ago, Disney launched its first princess: Snow White. Over time, the princess franchise became one of the studio’s most popular and profitable, being loved by millions of people around the world.

However, as the years went by, the stories for the new characters evolved more and more, with the aim of fitting in with current society, and enabling people to identify more with the princesses.

With this in mind, RECREIO put together a list of 5 changes to the princesses over the years. Check out!

1. Romance left aside

The romantic relationship between princes and princesses was, for many years, one of the main focuses of Disney fairy tales. Currently, this characteristic has changed a lot where, in some cases, the prince does not even exist in the plot. In “Frozen”, for example, the main point is the relationship between the sisters Anna and Elsa, while in “Moana”, it is their self-knowledge, and the journey on the high seas.

2. Greater diversity

At first, the princesses did not have much physical or racial diversity, and were always described in the same way: white, thin and with straight hair. From the Renaissance Era onwards this began to change, and we began to receive increasingly diverse characters, with girls with different characteristics and from other parts of the world, such as Mulan, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Tiana, Moana, among others.

3. End of “perfection”

The personality of the characters is also something that has changed a lot. While in the first films they adopted the characteristic of being “perfect”, today this is no longer the case. Although they are all still adorable, many have also become determined, clumsy, funny, or even insecure — just like us in real life.

4. More defined objectives

In “Snow White” and “Cinderella”, for example, it is not clear what the princesses’ goals in life are. However, from the Renaissance Era onwards, the characters began to make what they wanted very explicit: while Ariel had the dream of going to the world of humans, Mulan wanted to spare her father from going to war injured, and Jasmine longed for power. decide important aspects of your own life, and live like a normal girl.

5. No damsels in distress

The characteristic of damsels in distress is also a classic point that was always present in the first princess productions, but that started to be left aside over the years. Pocahontas and Mulan, for example, already appear as the heroines of their stories — with the first saving her beloved from death, and the second saving China from the invasion of the Huns.
