As Netflix picks up the series Griselda A new trend is emerging on social media about a Colombian cocaine baroness from the 1970s and 1980s. Get out of the good-natured chic “clean girl” fashion, make way for the gangster woman.

She borrowed from Lauren Bracco’s style The freedom fighters, Kim Kardashian’s silhouette and Melania Trump’s coldness. The “mob woman” or “mafioso” embodies this woman with supposed sexual charisma who has worked hard to build an empire and who makes it famous with designer sunglasses and flashy accessories. A glittering gold chain, she also wears a fur like no other, sitting atop tall leather boots, with her sultry and alluring makeup. In less than ten days, the #MobWifeAesthetics hashtag surpassed 50 million views. But why is the “mobster’s wife” so popular on social media from the beginning of 2024?

“Brave, tough, adventurous and liberated”

As reported by AFP, this style has been liked by many stars for some time, such as Dua Lipa, Shay, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner. “The crowd woman is bold, tough, adventurous and liberated,” explains Sara Jordan Arcuri (120,000 Instagram followers), a 29-year-old Italian-American from New Jersey, at the start of the trend. Indeed, individuals who adopt this appearance also adopt a state of mind. far from a “booty wife”, they show off their jewelry and expensive bags without a man. This trend has not escaped one of its most ardent exponents, Francis Ford Coppola. “I heard that the mafioso woman aesthetic is coming back.” writes the director Godfathera cult trilogy about mobsters, according to an Instagram post.

Tik Tok influencers love all the accessories of the “woman of the crowd”, but in 2024. faux fur (of course), we find leopard prints, tights, gold cascading jewelry and chain belts to slip around the waist. On the face side, TikToker Mikayla Nogueira (15.3 million subscribers) recommends “smoky eyes” for the perfect woman-of-the-crowd makeup look, kohl, unlimited false eyelashes, and “dark red lipstick.” All accompanied by a 1980s style hyper voluminous hair dryer.

“Self Confidence”

Gone is the trend of restrained luxury (“quiet luxury”), “clean girl”, wise man with a minimalist look, which was observed in 2023 among all influential people. The codes of the well-heeled bourgeoisie and the “clean girl” trend. Proponents of minimalism no longer have a place in the pulpit. “Over the past 90 days, searches for ‘mobwife’ on Google have increased by 2,122%, with the #mobwife hashtag gaining 160.9 million hits and #mobwifeaesthetic 130.6 million hits on TikTok.” noted Journo Research trend experts.

A success we owe to pop culture, obviously, and its mobster movies that shaped the style of these female characters, not because of their smooth beauty, but because of their charisma and poise. We think of Elvira Hancock, played by Michelle Pfeiffer Scar face (1983), in Connie The godfather by Coppola, Carmela on The Sopranos, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, or more recently as Polly Gray on Pinky Blinders. Recently, another series to support this trend came with the release Griseldaon Netflix, which tells the story of a Colombian cocaine baroness in 1970s and 1980s Miami.

Cultural appropriation

To the prosecutors who denounce the possible “cultural appropriation” of the Italian-American mafia, the influential Saea Jordan Arcuri responds: “The mob woman is not a philosophy of life, finding a partner, or getting rich. It’s just to do yourself a favor, boost your confidence, and set yourself free. It’s certainly not just for Italian Americans, but for all women who want it,” she concludes.
