After all, why doesn’t Zac Efron sing in the first ‘High School Musical’?

Ever wondered why Zac Efron’s voice isn’t used in the first High School Musical movie? Find out the possible reason!

Last weekend, on January 20th, one of Disney Channel’s classic films, “High School Musical”, celebrated its 18th anniversary. The franchise is one of the most popular ever launched by the channel, even receiving a spin-off series, entitled “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, launched by Disney+.

Something that has been known to fans for years is that, during the first film, the voice of Zac Efron, Troy Bolton’s interpreter, is not used in the songs. In its place, we hear the voice of Drew Seeley. But, do you know why this happened?

True reason

According to information released by ScreenRant, the reason behind the choice to include another actor’s voice in the songs would be a vocal technical detail. This is because, as reported by the portal, the tracks would have been previously composed for a tenor singer (high voice), while Zach He is a baritone (middle voice).

Despite this, during an interview with the Orlando Sentinel in 2007, Efron revealed that he had not been informed that another actor would sing the songs in his place.

“In the first film, after everything was recorded, my voice wasn’t in them. I didn’t receive any explanation. It just happened that way.”, revealed the star.

In the same year, Rolling Stone magazine explained that, despite not singing, his voice Zach was used only in a few selected lines, to mix his voice with that of Drew and not make fans uncomfortable during the film.

Original voice

The use of another singer to replace his singing voice, however, did not happen in the second and third films. This because Zac Efron He would have insisted that he sing in other productions, and his request was accepted by the production.

“That was a very important point for me. I had to put my foot down and fight to put my voice on these tracks.”, Efron also said during the interview with the Orlando Sentinel in 2007.

As for his other musicals, such as “Hairspray” and “The King of Show”, fans don’t need to worry either: all the songs present in the production, and which feature the actor’s participation, are sung by him.
