Barbie will not compete in the Oscar “Best Original Screenplay” category; discover the new category of the film starring Margot Robbie!
“Barbie”, the 2023 box office hit, will not compete for an Oscar in the “Best Original Screenplay” category. Even though Warner campaigned for the film to compete in this category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences disqualified the doll’s film from competing in the category in which the film was the favorite!
According to Variety, there was a change of categories and now “Barbie” will compete for “Best Adapted Screenplay”, as it is based on the famous Mattel doll. It is important to highlight that the Screenwriters Union (WGA) considered the film to be an original product and could compete for “Best Original Screenplay”, as it is a story based on a product and does not adapt any production.
However, this was not enough for the Oscar Academy, which has its own rules for nominees and barred voting for “Barbie” in the “Best Original Screenplay” category. Now, the doll’s film will face “Oppenheimer”, “American Fiction”, “Killers of the Flower Moon”, “The Zone of Interest” and “Poor Creatures”. Voting that decides the nominees for the award begins on January 11th and the event will be broadcast on March 10th.
