1+1 media announced that the issue from the New Year’s Evening Quarter program, which caused outrage among Ukrainians, will not be published on 1+1 media’s YouTube channels, and the entire episode of New Year’s Quarter will be re- – edit.
A migrant from Skadovsk, Kherson region makes fun of the Ukrainian language – this number was published in the program of the New Year’s Evening Quarter and provoked the real anger of Ukrainians. Kvartal and 1+1 media have since apologized for the number and promised to remove it from YouTube.
Scene from distortions
Kvartal’s sketch depicts a migrant from Skadovsk occupied by Russia in the Kherson region, who moved to Transcarpathia and, embarrassed, tried to speak Ukrainian, while excessively distorting the words, giving them a “funny ” sound.
The woman explained that she still does not speak Ukrainian, because she is a “tit dovska” (from Skadovsk), “spoke in Russian,” and only “growled / wolfchara” (studied) Ukrainian at school, but all the words were “vomited” (forgotten), so he didn’t want to “distort his own language.”
Reaction
It is important to understand the context; Skadovsk is now occupied by Russia. The mayor of Skadovsk, Alexander Yakovlev, condemned Kvartal 95 for inappropriate jokes and called on the creators of the show to apologize.
“Petlyura was right when he said: “We are not afraid of lice in Moscow, we are afraid of Ukrainian nits.” Jokes about boobs from Skadovsk probably seem very funny to some people. But let it on the conscience of the directors. I hope they will have the strength to apologize to the Ukrainians. Skadovsk is under occupation now, and in fact, what the residents of Skadovsk need now is support,” said the mayor.
The editor-in-chief of the Kherson publication Kavun.City, Evgenia Virlich, filed a complaint against the 1+1 TV channel with the Commission on Journalistic Ethics. In her complaint, Evgenia Virlich stated that the room at Studio Kvartal 95 contained direct and blatant discrimination against residents of southern and eastern Ukraine based on language, as well as discrimination against women.
In the complaint, the editor-in-chief recalled that Ukrainians living in the territory of Ukraine occupied by the Russians were in danger because of their pro-Ukrainian position, and recalled the conductor Yuriy Kerpatenko, who was killed by occupiers in Kherson, and in Skadosk, the nurse Tatyana Mudrenko, who shouted to the occupiers that “Skadovsk is Ukraine.”
replied Kvartal
Comedian Yuriy Veliky, who played a resident of Transcarpathia in the skit, said that if a “funny pun” was made from the name of another Ukrainian city, then the name of another city would be used here. And he admitted that perhaps “in fact, in this situation, it is inappropriate to choose Skadovsk for jokes, which is now under enemy occupation.”
“But this issue is not about “tits” and not about Skadovsk. This issue is about people who do not dare to speak Ukrainian in everyday communication, who are afraid that speaking with mistakes, somehow they will look wrong in other people’s eyes. Therefore, the main message of this issue is that there is no shame in making mistakes. It is shameful not to speak your own language in your own country,” he said.
TV channel 1+1 apologized for the number.
“We understand the public’s anger and apologize to viewers who were offended by this issue. The creative team that created this issue did not want to hurt the feelings of Ukrainians. In the Evening Quarter episodes, the team jokes about themselves, raising current topics, sometimes exaggerating them, because this is one of the laws of humor. This was exactly such a case,” said the 1+1 press service in a statement.
The team added that they had no intention of harming anyone, and believed that “raising treason out of the blue plays into the hands of the enemy, and by spreading this treason you are giving Katsap another reason to media. Let’s be united in this difficult time and don’t let the enemy sow chaos among Ukrainians.”
