Tony Awards 2022: The Complete List of Winners

“Strange Loop” and “Lehman Trilogy” won the 75th Tony Awards Sunday night, which marked the first ceremony in musicals and performances since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the theater industry.

After a very delayed show last year in New York, after returning to Radio City Music Hall, Broadway’s biggest night is officially back in full force, with a glowing and dazzling image. The four -hour broadcast was aired live from beach to beach on Paramount + and CBS, featuring “West Side Story” star and recent Oscar winner Ariana Deboz.

“What a season it is,” Deboz said at the start of the ceremony, after a high -energy performance drawn from classic Broadway shows of recent years. “For many of you it’s an attraction: starts, stops, dramatic twists”.

Michael R. Jackson’s autobiographical meta-musical, “Strange Loop,” followed by the black stone composer’s writing about the show’s black stone composer, with 11 nominations coming tonight. Eventually, the show received two of the most prestigious titles in the Best Musical and Best Book categories.

“I wrote it at a time when I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life,” Jackson said in a speech on stage. “I didn’t know I would continue. I’m feeling invisible to myself. I felt like I wasn’t heard. “I felt like it was incomprehensible and I just wanted to create a little bit of a life line for me as a black gay.”

This award is the latest award for Jackson, who previously won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for drama. While show star Jacqueline Spivey, who made her Broadway debut in comedy, is expected to win the Best Actor award, Miles Frost got an unexpected win on “MJ: Musical”.

Actors from five other nominated musicals also performed at the ceremony – “Girl from the North Country”, “MJ: The Musical”, “Mr. Saturday Night”, “Paradise Square” and “Six”, as in addition to the stars of “The Music Man” and Sex Second “Company”, the latter won, among other awards, the best musical revival and the double trophy in the acting categories for Pete Lupone and Matt Doyle.

As for the plays, The Lehman Trilogy, a multigenerational story about the rise and fall of the finance company of the same name, won Best Picture, as well as awards for director Sam Mendes and actor Simon Russell Bill. . The gay baseball drama “Take Me Out” won the award for Outstanding Performance in the Show, while Jesse Tyler Ferguson was honored for his role on the show against his stars Jesse Williams and Michael Oberholzer.

The original cast of “Spring Awakening” also took to the stage to reunite for the show, following the release of HBO’s latest documentary. Additionally, Bernadette Peters paid tribute to legendary musical theater composer Stephen Sondheim, who died in November, and five -time winner Angela Lansber received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the start of the show.
