Prince Harry has ordered the Daily Mail to pay a hefty fine

British justice has handed down its verdict and ordered Charles III’s youngest son to pay a fine in a tabloid trial Mail on Sunday.

Very badPrince Harry was ordered to pay £48,000 (€56,000) to publishing company ANL this Monday, December 11. Mail on Sunday, after losing a defamation lawsuit against an English tabloid. Among the many lawsuits filed by King Charles III’s youngest son against British newspapers, one concerns an article about his police protection when he visits the United Kingdom.

The controversial article, published in February 2022, accused Harry, according to his defense, of “lying” and “trying to keep secret” his complaint against the government for trying to get police protection in the country. But after the request of the Duke of Sussex, which was aimed at defeating the defense Mail on Sunday denied last Friday, British courts on Monday ordered him to pay £48,447 by December 29.

In his case against the tabloids, Harry can be happy to have won a verdict against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN), which published: DailyMirror, Sunday mirror And Sunday People!, for illegal collection of information. The High Court in London ruled this Friday that the prince was indeed the victim of “modest” hacking of phone messages between 1996 and 2010, upholding 15 of the 33 disputed articles cited in the proceedings. MGN must now compensate him £140,600 (€163,000).

The judge also highlighted Prince Harry’s “tendency” to believe that “everything published was the result of voicemail interception”, as this practice was “prevalent at the Mirror Group at the time”. But this practice was “not the only journalistic tool at the time, and the claims related to 18 other articles do not stand up to scrutiny.” The judge also highlighted the “distress” Harry had suffered “because of the illegal activity against him and his loved ones”.

Controversy over police protection

With Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, leaving the royal family and the United Kingdom, they are no longer entitled to police protection at the expense of British taxpayers. The King’s son, who is therefore sometimes forced to resort to private protection at his own expense, had requested that he be able to use his own personal funds for police protection while in the United Kingdom, but this request was refused; the courts in May.

He has initiated a second procedure on this matter, where he is challenging the termination of his systematic security support while in the United Kingdom. Harry’s complaint against the UK Home Office is more specifically about the authorities’ decision in February 2020 to grant him police protection only on a case-by-case basis. After three days of hearings last week, the decision was reserved.
