In 2008, “The Hunger Games” hit bookstore shelves to present the story of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl who volunteered as a tribute (as the young people chosen to compete in the games are called) in place of her younger sister to participate in the 74th televised battle that gives the book its title.
The plot gained four more titles written by the North American author Suzanne Collinsin addition to five films, the most recent of which is the adaptation of the work released in 2020, “The Hunger Games: A Song of Birds and Snakes”, which hit theaters last Wednesday, the 15th.
How do the Hunger Games work?
In the first book and feature film in the saga, it is explained how the Hunger Games work. It is exposed that around 74 years before Katniss’s adventure, the fictional country called Panem, made up of 12 districts and a Capital, went through an uprising.
The rebellion was stopped with the victory of the Capital, which to assert its power over the territory of Panem began to hold annually the bloodthirsty competition called the Hunger Games, which is nothing more than a controlled arena in which all the selected tributes must fight until the victory. death, leaving only one ‘winner’.
For the battle to take shape, a draw called “Harvest” is held, where a boy and a girl, between twelve and eighteen years old, from each of the twelve districts in the territory, are selected as competitors.
Who created the Hunger Games?
In “Hunger Games: The Song of Birds and Serpents” it is explained that the idea was created by the dean of the Academy of Panem, Casca Highbottom.
Years before the rebellion, he was a student at the Academy. Along with his friend, Crassus Snow (father of Coriolanus), he received as an activity from one of his teachers, Dr. Volumnia Gau, the mission of planning a hypothetical political punishment so that the enemies would never forget the crimes committed, as well as, if they were new rebellions were avoided.
Highbottom then created the Hunger Games, but without the intention of delivering the project, as he found it too cruel and brutal. However, Crassus Snow transcribed all the ideas and handed the plan to Dr. Volumnia Gau without his friend’s consent. The action ended their friendship.
The worst happened after the Capital won the revolt, as Dr. Volumnia Gau ensured that the project was put into practice, crediting Highbottom. In the first year of the games, he had to learn to deal with the guilt of having thought about the whole concept of the insane competition, with the use of opioids as an escape valve.
