Played by Rachel Zegler, Lucy Gray is a character in “The Hunger Games: A Song of Birds and Snakes”
Last Wednesday, the 15th, “The Hunger Games: A Song of Birds and Snakes” arrived in theaters presenting the origin of Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), before becoming the tyrannical President Snow, and his relationship with Lucy Gray (Rachel Zegler).
But who is Lucy Gray?
Lucy Gray Baird is a talented singer and songwriter born years before the rebellion that preceded the start of the Hunger Games. The character of Rachel Zegler is presented in the trailers as a tribute from District 12, however, she is not originally a member of the same district as Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson).
This is because, alongside her parents and her two older brothers, she is a member of a troop of travelers called Covey. This group was forced to remain in the coal mining district after the collapse of the rebellion.
In this way, the character whose attributes are determination, intelligence and courage, stands out among the other inhabitants of the place, since, forced to work for generations in the coal mines, they had all their trust taken away by the capital.
More than that, Lucy Gray’s story is marked by tragedy, as she became the only survivor of her family, after her brothers died in ways not revealed to the public, and her parents were murdered by the Peacekeepers after not agreeing with the decision, as revealed by the Screenrant portal.
Imprisoned in District 12, Covey became known for their musical abilities, becoming beloved by the population, as they always performed at events, playing most weekends at the Hob.
Furthermore, of all the Covey members, only five are alive at the time Lucy is chosen as a tribute. They are: Maude Ivory Baird, Barb Azure Baird, Tam Amber, Clerk Carmine Clade and Billy Taupe Clade.
Lucy has a great relationship with Maude Ivory (Vaughan Reilly), her younger cousin. Their dynamic is reminiscent of that experienced by Katniss and Primrose Everdeen, as the girl is always protected by her older cousin.
How does Lucy Gray become a tribute?
Still at Covey, Lucy had a relationship with Bill Taupe Clade, a man who left her for the mayor’s daughter: Mayfair Lipp. As a result, a rivalry arose between the two, and Bill’s new girlfriend plotted to make Lucy the chosen one for the Hunger Games.
Upon discovering Mayfair’s plan, Lucy Gray placed a snake on the collar of her rival’s dress, without her realizing it. Thus, the mayor’s daughter was surprised by a bite from the animal, causing her to faint and be rushed for medical attention.
Chaos was brewing, but to complete the scene, Lucy Gray sang a song to the audience while on stage before being taken to the Capital.
