Why did November 6th become Stranger Things Day?

Since the premiere of “Stranger Things” November 6th took on a new meaning. This is because the date is used to celebrate Stranger Things Day, where fans can remember everything that has happened in Hawkins and the Upside Down, as well as take a look at new content made available throughout the day by Netflix.

But why did November 6th become Stranger Things Day?

Doubts may arise, therefore, the series created by the brothers Duffer premiered in the streaming platform’s catalog on July 15, 2016, so the celebration would be expected to take place on that same day and month — which doesn’t happen for a good reason!

This is because, the tributes to the production emerged from the consideration of the event that started the entire plot experienced by Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and his friends: the sudden disappearance of Will Byers that occurred while he was cycling home from playing “Dungeons & Dragons” with Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) and Lucas Sinclar (Caleb McLaughlin) in the basement of one of their houses.

For those who don’t remember, Joyce Byers’ youngest son (Winona Ryder) and brother of Johnatan Byers (Charlie Heaton) disappeared on the night of November 6, 1983. In fact, it was on that same day that Eleven opened the portal to the Upside Down, transforming the city of Hawkins into the stage for the most mysterious and dark events.

According to the MixdeSeries portal, it is not known for sure whether it was Netflix or the series’ fanbase that started the celebration. Still, there are some publications on social media on the date in 2016 and 2017, but it was in 2018 that the date was made official by Netflix, establishing it as a day dedicated to new releases related to the title.

Among this year’s celebrations, the platform provided a preview of “Stranger Things: The First Shadow”, a play derived from the series set more than twenty years before the original plot. The video shows behind the scenes of production; look!

It is worth remembering that the play was written by Kate Trefry and is managed by Stephen Daldry to show a little more about the past of characters like Joyce (Isabella Pappas) and Bob Newby (Christopher Buckley), as well as Vecna (Louis McCartney) and Dr. Brenner (Patrick Vail).

With performances starting on November 17th, at the Phoenix Theatre, in London, the play has the following synopsis: “Hawkins, 1959, a normal town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister doesn’t take his radio show seriously, and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family discovers that a new beginning isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past are far reaching.”

In addition, the platform started a special live broadcast through its official TikTok account at noon. Look here!

Before that, Netflix announced last Friday, the 3rd, that the first store inspired by Stranger Things in Latin America, Hawkins, will be based in the JK Iguatemi shopping mall, in São Paulo, and will be temporarily open between November 14th and November 17th. March 2024, as thematic commerce is part of an action that has already taken place in several cities around the world, such as New York and Paris, for example.

The store has more than 200m² and will feature 150 products, ranging from clothing and accessories, to decorative objects and collectibles, several produced especially for Brazilians. In addition, there is a series themed circuit, where visitors who purchase their tickets at Sympla (worth R$ 25.00) will be able to see sets used in the production and see original costumes up close.
