Over the years, Turma da Mônica became one of the biggest hits in Brazil. However, despite being one of the most beloved franchises among Brazilians, many people still get confused when we talk about the first characters in the gang created by the birthday boy this Friday, the 27th: Mauricio de Sousa.
Contrary to what many imagine, Mônica was not the first character. The pioneers of the Bairro do Limoeiro crowd were Franjinha and Bidu, who made their debut in 1959 in a comic strip published in the newspaper Folha da Tarde.
At that time, Mauricio He also had another position within the newspaper: he was a police reporter. He only got a chance to publish his own strip after deciding to illustrate his reports, something that was a huge success among the newspaper’s readers.
After publishing his first comic strip with Bidu and Franjinha, the stories began to gain more and more public attention, resulting in the creation of new characters and new stories.
But, and when did Mônica appear?
Mônica herself only appeared in 1963, as a supporting character in a Cebolinha comic strip. Before her, there were Penadinho, Horácio, Piteco, Hiroshi, Zézinho and Chico Bento.
