In a statement to Gshow, MTV said that the moment is not one of global celebration of music but rather one of mourning, given the thousands of lives lost. The broadcaster also released a complete statement to the press, which states that the awards are expected to take place again next year:
Given the volatility of world events, we decided not to go ahead with the MTV EMA 2023 as a precaution for the thousands of employees, team members, artists, fans and partners who travel from all corners of the world to host this show.
The MTV EMA is a global celebration of music held annually, but as we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a time for global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a time of mourning.
We hope to return again with the MTV EMA in November 2024.”
EMA 2023 Nominees
