A collection of scarves with works stolen or destroyed by Russia has been released in Ukraine. Proceeds from their sale will be used to restore houses in the Kyiv region. This is reported by Ukrinform in connection with UNITED24.

“The works of art that formed the basis of the collection of OLIZ and UNITED24 were appropriated or destroyed by Russia. Like many others, the exact number of them is impossible to imagine. They were blown up, cut, burned, trampled on the ground, but most was stolen. To later be exhibited in their museums and galleries and called Russian art. Each scarf is a story of a stolen or destroyed work of Ukrainian artists. Each scarf is an assistant in cultural diplomacy, an opportunity to tell the world the truth,” said UNITED24 platform coordinator Yaroslava Gres.

One of the scarves depicts a mosaic of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica. It was created by an unknown artist in the 12th century for St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery. However, in 1937, the Soviet authorities blew up the cathedral, and the mosaic was dismantled and taken to Moscow. So it is in the Tretyakov Gallery.

Another accessory is Arkhip Kuindzhi’s painting The Red Event, the original of which is in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The sketch of the painting is kept in the Mariupol Art Museum. Kuindzhi, but the invaders destroyed it in the spring of 2022 with an airstrike.

Another scarf reproduces a fragment of a house painting by Ukrainian artist – representative of naive art Polina Raiko in Oleshki, Kherson region. On June 6 of this year, Russian troops blew up the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, and the building was flooded. As a result, most of the paintings were lost forever.
