The Austrian-American actor, who rose to fame as a bodybuilder in the 1970s, spoke bluntly about what it feels like to see a body lose its strength and youth on Howard Stern on Thursday, Oct. 12.

From Anne Hathaway to Andie McDowell, there are plenty of actresses who want to break the dictum of aging. The film industry has in fact imposed many age taboos on actresses who condemn their male counterparts to an expiration date that does not exist.

However, not all men relish the idea of aging. And if the prevailing discourse is rather to accept this natural phenomenon, Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke differently on the subject. In an interview with the “Howard Stern Show”, the actor returned to the fact that aging and seeing a changed body is an essential element of his career. So, he confides in the presenter what he thinks when he appears in front of the mirror; Now they just hang on. I mean, what is going on here?

Open heart surgery

For the 76-year-old actor, therefore, the challenge is that the body he sculpted over many years of bodybuilding, and which became an essential component of his success, is gradually deteriorating. And that it’s harder for him than for others, even though he’s “in much better shape than most people his age.” “It’s one thing to see yourself getting older and less and less fit, but most people have never been fit. So what does it mean to be out of shape? They just see their bodies getting darker and darker over time.” But for those who have also embarked on a political career, the situation is different when you have spent your life building muscles and therefore regret that you no longer see your abs as defined or your protruding veins. Especially since he never thought about all that in his 30s or 40s. “And it’s just nasty.”

For Arnold Schwarzenegger, it was his open-heart surgery at age 50 that changed everything. “It was the first time I felt vulnerable and the doctors started telling me I shouldn’t lift weights again, heavy weights like that.” So now he has to be careful how he breathes in and out because of his valve. A turning point that has therefore changed his athletic training but also his diet, the former Mr. Universe is confident that from now on he will only enjoy two meals a day: breakfast and dinner. “I don’t eat breakfast anymore because my body works less well and burns fewer calories.”

But it would take more than that to discourage the saga actor Terminator who softens his words. “I am 76 years old. I am full of energy. I am full of enthusiasm. I’m as enthusiastic and excited as I was in my 30s.” Enough to fuel optimism.
