Loki: Who is Ouroboros?

The first episode of the second season of “Loki” was made available in the Disney+ catalog last Thursday, 5th, introducing a new character: Ouroboros. The figure had been speculated for the new year of the series for months, emerging through a rumor that spread on X (formerly Twitter) by the famous insider Daniel Richtman.

The truth is that the character’s presence was confirmed in the trailer for the new episodes, where Ouroboros, played by Ke Huy Quan— actor who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in “Everything in Every Place at the Same Time” — is introduced when he receives an unexpected view of Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in his workroom, becoming the one who presents the reason why the God of Mischief is being pulled through time between the past and future so many times: there has been a temporal slip! After all, who is Ouroboros?

Along with the rumor (which turned out to be true), Richtman said that it is likely that Ouroboros, also known as OB, is responsible for the AVT technology. See the tweet!

The definition is linked to the casting information released at the time. As reported by the Screenrant portal, When would play an “AVT archivist” who would be “AVT’s Q”, implying that he would act in a similar way to Q from the 007 franchise, a figure that helps James Bond giving you new equipment and advanced weapons.

The confirmation came in the first episode of the series, where it is revealed that Ouroboros works in the memory and improvement sector, which is located in the basement of AVT. There, he remains without any contact, with Loki and Mobius’ visit being the first in 400 years.

Still, it is worth highlighting that he is a great genius, being responsible for building the temporal aura extractor that will help Loki get rid of temporal slippage, and also for writing the AVT manual, which contains details of the mechanical classifications and routine maintenance of each sector, device and all software used on site.

But what about in comics?

As for Ouroboros in the comics, there are some different representations for the name, the best known being Admiral Ouroboros, the antagonist of Sufista Prateado Vol. 7 # 11 and Oculus Oroboros, which is not a person, but rather an object formed by two serpents biting each other’s tails, used to conduct elemental magic.

Ouroboros in Norse mythology

It is worth remembering that the shape of the Oculus Oroboros depicts the classic format, where a snake forms a circle with the tip of its tail in its mouth. The image, which according to Screenrant, has roots in the iconography of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece, also has a connection with the mythology that governs the stories of Thor and Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: the Norse.

This happens because, in the set of legends of the Scandinavian peoples, the Ouroboros is formed by Jörmungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent, a gigantic creature with an appearance similar to a snake.

This being lives in the sea and due to its size, it can go around the Earth completely and bite its own tail. With this, the legend explains that when Jörmungandr lets go of his tail, Ragnarök, that is, the end of the world through the destruction of the cosmos, will occur.

However, the portal explains that the connection becomes even deeper considering that Jörmungandr is, in fact, one of Loki’s own children in Norse Mythology, with Hel, the Goddess of Death, and the wolf Fenrir and that Thor fights with this creature a few times, the last time being in Ragnarök.

With these figures having already been represented in the Marvel films in “Thor: Ragnarök”, it is unlikely that mythological history will be repeated, so it is theorized that there may be a close relationship between the characters in When It is Hiddleston on the Serie.
