In total, the wizarding world has 11 magical schools spread around the world. Meet some of them!
Every Harry Potter fan shares the same dream: to have the opportunity to study at Hogwarts. The school of magic and witchcraft is the most famous in the saga, but it is not the only one that exists in the magical world. Through the Wizarding World (formerly Pottermore), the official website of the franchise, the author of the universe, J.K. Rowlingrevealed that there are 11 schools around the world regulated by the International Confederation of Wizards.
On the portal, the writer describes in more detail just about eight institutions: Hogwarts, Ilvermorny, Uagadou, Durmstrang Institute, Mahoutokoro, Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, Koldovstoretz and Castelobruxo. Learn more about each one of them!
1. Castelobruxo – Brazil
Despite being located in Brazil, more specifically in the Amazon Rainforest, Castelobruxo serves students from all over Latin America. To wizards, the building is “an imposing square edifice made of golden stone, often compared to a temple” as described in the Wizarding World.
The school is protected by Caiporas, and the students’ uniform consists of light green robes, however, there are no confirmations if the students are also divided into houses. What is known is that the institution specializes in studies of Herbology (the study of plants in the wizarding world) and Magizoology (the study of magical creatures), and is extremely recognized for its exchange program for European students.
Bill Weasley, Ron Weasley’s brother, was almost part of this program, and frequently exchanged correspondence with a student from Brazil. However, his family ended up not having enough money for the exchange and he remained at Hogwarts.
2. Ilvermorny — North America
All little wizards from North American countries are taken to the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Founded by James Steward and Isolt Syare, it is considered by the wizarding world as one of the most democratic and least elitist institutes among all the others, being extremely respected throughout the planet.
Like Hogwarts, at Ilvermorny students are divided into four houses that represent the parts of wizards: Pukwudgie is the heart, Horned Serpent is the mind, Thunderbird is the soul, and Pumaruna is the body.
3. Durmstrang Institute — Europe
Durmstrang is somewhat better known to the public for being one of the participating schools in the Triwizard Tournament within the books. It is located in the far north of Europe, and only accepts purebred students. That is, wizards who were Muggle-born, however powerful they are, do not have the right to study there.
Another controversy involving the name of the school is related to its education. Durmstrang is known for its Dark Arts class, which is considered one of the institution’s top courses. Among his famous students, we can mention Victor Krum, the great Quidditch player, and the most powerful dark wizard of all time Gellert Grindelwald.
4. Beauxbatons Academy of Magic — France
Beauxbatons is also present at the Triwizard Tournament. It was because of him that Fleur Delacour had the opportunity to meet Bill Weasley, whom she married years later. The Academy is located in France, and serves students from Portugal, Spain, Holland, Luxembourg and Belgium.

Another love affair involving Beauxbatons is that of the alchemist Nicolas Flamel, famous for creating the Philosopher’s Stone, and his wife Perenelle, who are said to have met while studying at school. As per the Wizarding World.
5. Uagadou — Africa
The greatest school of magic in the entire magical world is the Uagadou School of Magic. She serves students from all over the African continent, where her great specialty is self-transfiguration. The common thing there is to perform spells with your own hand – but there are still some wizards who prefer to use the famous wand.
Uagadou also has a completely different way of announcing to students that they have been accepted into the institution. Everything happens through dream messengers, who leave some sign for children in their hands while they are sleeping. When they wake up, they are already faced with the news that they have been accepted into the school.
6. Mahoutokoro — Japan
Unlike the other institutions, the Mahoutokoro School of Magic is the only one that is not a boarding school – that is, students go straight home when classes are over for the day. There, students wear enchanted uniforms that change color according to each student’s level of study, and magically adjust their size as the student grows.
The school is mostly known for preparing amazing Quidditch athletes. According to legend, the sport arrived in the country after Hogwarts students decided to go around the planet with brooms that were not at all appropriate.
7. Koldovstoretz — Russia
The last school revealed in the world of magic is Koldovstoretz, located in Russia, and which was present in the game Wonderbook: Book of Potions. As J.K. Rowling did not publish a text explaining in depth how the school works, little is known about it.
What has already been revealed is that over there, Quidditch is played in a slightly different way. Instead of using brooms — as happens in the rest of the world — in Koldovstoretz, students use whole trees to fly.
