Despite not belonging to Mickey’s house, these princesses are great inspirations for animation lovers; find out who they are!
Over its 100 years of existence, Disney has solidified its name as one of the greatest animation studios, and a large part of this achievement is due to the princess films, where Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida and Moana were added and brought fairy tales to the screen in a unique way.
However, in addition to the royalty coming from Mickey’s house, lovers of animated stories starring crown holders had the chance to follow narratives as inspiring as those in other studios. Therefore, RECREIO has gathered below 5 films about non-Disney princesses.
1. Anastasia
Released in 1997 by Fox, the film tells the story of Anastasia, a brave young woman who ends up in a foster home with no memories of her past, after her entire family falls victim to a spell by the evil Rasputin.
Despite the great trauma and losing the memories of her royal past, she has always insisted on unraveling who she really is and who her real family members are. Thus, among several adventures and twists, she discovers that she is the last surviving heiress of the Romanov royal family and that her grandmother, the Imperial Grand Duchess, has been looking for her for all this time.
2. Fiona
Introduced in ‘Shrek’, a 2001 film that hit theaters by DreamWorks, Fiona appears as the princess who is the victim of a curse responsible for turning her into an ogress during the night. The event makes her trapped in a tower for threatening the peace of her kingdom and only has the possibility of having her old life back when she receives a kiss from true love.
Waiting for the prince who would face the dragon that defended the tower and save her from the spell, Fiona is surprised when an ogre becomes responsible for taking her out. But despite the unconventional rescue, the beautiful highness ends up finding her “happily ever after” and building a beautiful family with Shrek.
3. Marina
Another DreamWorks adventure, ‘Sinbad: The Legend of the Seven Seas’ was released in 2003, and introduced Marina, the fearless bride of Prince Proteus who breaks the historical pattern of female behavior by becoming interested in so-called masculine things. In this case, the beloved princess wants to sail the seven seas.
Thus, while embarking on an adventure with Sinbad to retrieve the Book of Peace from Eris, which ended up being stolen by the swashbuckling sailor with whom she travels, the holder of the crown discovers her passion for the sea and also, a new love.
4. Thumbelina
Introducing the classic narrative of the damsel in distress, ‘Polergarzinha’ came out in 1994. The film rights were purchased by Disney in 2020, however, its origin is quite different, as it was released by Warner Brothers.
The plot accompanies the young Polergazinha, a very small girl, the size of a thumb, who is kidnapped by frogs who intend to force her to marry. However, amidst the chaos, the girl ends up finding her true love.

To close the list, nothing fairer than introducing Princess Bala, a character included in ‘FormiguinhaZ’, a 1998 film, produced by DreamWorks.
The young ant, who had her hand promised to the General, felt that she had a vocation for something greater, and ends up discovering the meaning of her life in an adventure with Z, the protagonist of the plot, with whom she falls in love.
