The technique consists of hitting certain strategic points on his face and body to send a message to his brain and help him fall asleep more easily. Is it really effective?
Brain tapping, or brain tapping in French, has just been added to the list of popular sleep tips on TikTok. She promises to induce a general state of relaxation so that she can abandon herself to Morpheus’ arms. Videos posted on social media show people touching specific points on their face and body while repeating certain phrases such as “even if I’m worried, I relax and focus on the moment” or even “I release from me.” I’m tensed and I’m falling asleep.” These tapping gestures may surprise a person, but they are part of a psycho-energetic method used by psychologists called EFT (for Emotional Freedom Technique). The #efttapping hashtag accompanying the videos now has 74 million views on TikTok. We consider what the method actually costs.

Relax the brain with meridians
Clinical psychologist Camille Junot works specifically at the National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance (INSV). According to the practitioner, “brain tapping” is an effective method to improve sleep. “I use it very regularly to help people with chronic insomnia,” she says. It should be said that the Emotional Freedom Technique targets the emotions that prevent you from sleeping. “Anxiety, fear of the upcoming event… it is important to identify the emotional cause of insomnia in order to be able to eliminate it,” explains the psychologist.
The method works by touching certain points on the body. “Many scientific studies prove that gesture acts on the amygdala, the part of the brain that assesses the events we are exposed to by activating or deactivating physiological stress mechanisms. By gently touching these points, a reassuring signal is sent that prevents the onset of stress symptoms and promotes sleep,” he explains.
These points are twelve in number and correspond to the entry and exit points of the major meridians recognized by traditional Chinese medicine, the circulation streams of our body’s energy. These are the same areas used in acupuncture.
How to train brain touch
According to the expert, “brain tapping” is a risk-free method that is easy to apply at home with “self-care”. To do it right in bed to sleep, Camille Juneau recommends to proceed from top to bottom; we start with the fingers of one or two hands hitting the first point on the top of the skull, then between the eyebrows, the outer corners of the eyes, under the eyes, under the nose, under the mouth, ending with the necks, hands and chest. “Aloud or just in our mind, we repeat to ourselves the intention we want to work on; for example, “I’m sleeping” or “I’m calm,” he adds.
The method has been accepted and rejected in different versions on social networks and by professionals. Everything can be effective, according to Camille Juneau, provided you correctly identify the points to touch and focus on the source of sleep disorders. Therefore, it is up to everyone to try different alternatives and choose the one that seems better.
Sometimes an inadequate method
However, brain tapping should not be seen as a miracle and unstoppable solution. In some cases, this may not be sufficient. “Some of those suffering from chronic insomnia cannot find the emotional origin of their disorders,” notes the psychologist. It may also happen that they simply do not exist or need special treatment. A consultation with a sleep doctor is recommended in these situations.
