Before / after. how a soulless 60 m2 apartment in Montmartre was transformed into a colorful, hyper-optimized three-bedroom apartment

Green, pink, a hidden dressing room, a library with a bench and integrated storage, a bright entrance with arches that let the light in… Thibaut Picard multiplied good ideas to give the 60 m² Parisian a unique personality.

Long-time architect Thibaut Picard, who graduated from ENSA Paris-Val de Seine at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, has traveled the world. DL2A, Valode et Pistre, AW2… the prestigious agencies with which he has collaborated for ten years have entrusted him with projects all over the planet, particularly in the field of luxury hotels and prestigious residences. In 2019, Thibault settled in Paris and opened his own agency. From now on, he puts his experience at the service of various clients who appreciate his experience, but also his ability to combine his respect for the existing, the history of the places and the requests of each one.

The starting point

“It was my journey as an interior designer in the luxury hotel industry that attracted my clients. They travel a lot, love beautiful addresses and want to find these hotel codes in their Paris apartment and have a sense of a change of scenery. Our cooperation was realized with this 60 m² apartment located at 5e Montmartre building floor. They fell in love with this light-flooded space that has a living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. However, restructuring was planned, particularly at the entry level; it was necessary to revise the distribution of the parent’s room and access to the bathroom. Very long and wide, with doors, one of which opened onto storage at the back, this entrance was a veritable black hole. »

Then, the entrance, where some of the doors have been replaced by arches. Jerome Galland

“Because the entrance was so spacious, we decided to work on it as a separate room with storage, including a dressing room in the living room. But having a series of closets is out of the question. All storage elements are arranged to create breathability. So there is a niche with a bench that allows you to sit down to put on your shoes, for example. It also allows for a different perspective. Since this hallway had no direct windows, we made sure there was light from the other rooms. We removed the double doors leading to the living room and redesigned this area as two arches. The contrast of the dark green color that dresses the entrance also plays an essential role in this introduction of light. We are immediately immersed in this strong tone and it creates an interesting shock. On the floor side, we were pleasantly surprised to discover beautiful laminate under the carpet. So we preserved it by repairing and varnishing it. »

Next, a library was created that included a bench to scale the dining area of the living room. Jerome Galland

Then, a friendly and bright living room. Jerome Galland

“We didn’t want to put carpentry all over the apartment. Instead, we decided to have some solid pieces, like the dining room library with its built-in bench. Since my clients already had their own table, we worked with this piece to create a harmonious whole. We started with its color, which is also a fresher contrast to the color of the entrance, from its dimensions to creating a bookcase with a seat, which is also a kind of display case with niches for storing books and displaying beautiful objects. There’s also closed built-in storage on either side, perfect for hiding anything you need that doesn’t deserve to be on display. I like to create beautiful decorative style furniture, but I also want it to be practical. Finally, since my clients are music fans, the living room is a small area dedicated to this activity, with a buffet that is the counterpart of a library. »

The kitchen

Then, an optimized kitchen with green furniture, the dominant color in the apartment. Jerome Galland

“I really like working on kitchens that are open to the living room. But, here, for technical reasons and because it is also important for ecologically responsible reasons not to break everything when we can do with what we have, we left it in the original place, separated from the dining room, to eat. It also met the expectations of my clients who liked to cook well and wanted to avoid odors in the living room. We haven’t really changed this kitchen. We even kept the black tile on the floor that was recent. We have just changed the furniture. »

Bedroom

Then, a headboard with a corrugated base that matches the moldings of the apartment. Jerome Galland

“In this room, we really wanted to play on contrasts. It’s a room where the sun comes in most of the day, and we wanted to highlight this enveloping aspect with this dusty pink that changes with the light. This pink also works very well with the green that dominates the rest of the apartment. So, in this bedroom we are with details such as the headboard and its corrugated base, which allows us to play with the wall moldings and thus integrate the hidden wardrobe more discreetly. Our client has always dreamed of having a hidden room in his house. We made her dream come true by hiding a dressing room in her bedroom. To do this, we condemned the pantry, which was located at the end of the entrance corridor, moved the partitions and slightly reduced the surface of the room. When the doors of this “fake closet” are closed, you don’t doubt for a moment that there is a small room behind. »

The bathroom

Then, an expensive bathroom. Jerome Galland

“Originally, this bathroom opened into the hallway. As we wanted to create a true parental suite, it had to be accessible from the bedroom. This choice also allowed us to delete the row of doors lining the entrance. So we condemned the front entrance that looked into the living room and opened the door to the bedroom. There was a bathroom under the window. At the request of our customers, we removed it and connected the entire length of the toilet with a very large shower shaped like a glass box. It is not in front of the window, but towards it. We wanted to work on the very expensive side in this space, so a green marble effect porcelain stoneware was chosen, a color that is a common thread in this apartment. »
