This Saturday, June 17, Charles III was celebrated with the traditional Trooping the Color parade. Accompanied by Prince William, the monarch then sat on the back of his trusty steed. The first since 1986.
This Saturday, June 17, saw the first parade of King Charles III as sovereign. Held annually in June, the parade marks the official birthday of the monarch, who will however celebrate her 75th birthday on November 14 at a private event. Having been crowned on May 6, he made his procession on horseback. A first for the King since 1986.
Under cloudy skies, Charles III marched out of Buckingham Palace, followed by several members of his family, including his brother Prince Edward, his sister Princess Anne and his son and heir to the throne, Prince William. All three on horseback. Queen Camilla, Kate Middleton and her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, followed the procession in a carriage.

Experienced horses
This parade tradition, called “Trooping the colour”, dates back to 1748 during the reign of George II, who, despite being born on October 30, wanted to take advantage of the good weather to celebrate his birthday. Televised, the event always draws large crowds around Buckingham Palace, where the parade takes place. About 1,400 soldiers, 400 musicians and 200 horses take part in the ceremony held in London’s Horse Guards Parade Square. On this occasion, the pirate Juno led the procession, followed by the three drum horses, Perseus, Atlas and Apollo. These equids, which carry the drums during parades, are the most experienced animals of the British armed forces. They hold the rank of major and have a name taken from the names of Greek mythological figures.

41 cannon shots
The 1st Battalion of the Welsh Guards was honored this year. After inspecting the troops, Charles III led the procession to Buckingham Palace. This, as the head of the state and commander in chief of the armed forces. Joining Queen Camilla and other active members of the royal family, he then greeted the crowd from the palace balcony before taking part in the air parade, which was preceded by a 41-gun fire from Green Park. This parade had 70 planes.
The celebrations of the King’s birthday are the occasion to announce the distinctions and decorations of persons and anonymous people with the New Year. This year’s list includes novelist Martin Amis, who died last month, director Stephen Frears, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and 18-year-old student-turned-anti-violence campaigner Junior Froud.
