Who is Spider-Man 2099?
Spider-Man 2099 is the alter-ego of Miguel O’Hara, a geneticist of Mexican descent from Earth-928. The scientist worked at the Alchemax corporation, which had several criticisms, since he disagreed with the methods used by the company and the domination it had over society.
Even so, he was included in a project that aimed to improve human genes, finding the apex of what he could withstand after the company used a human guinea pig in the tests, which ended up leading the person to be transformed into a hideous creature until he finally passed away.
The traumatic scene leads O’Hara to resign – but getting rid of the corporation becomes a difficult task, as, willing to keep Miguel still as an employee, the head of the company, Tyler Stone, makes him consume a highly addictive drug from Alchemax itself. , thus, dependent on the substance, he would have no option but to continue working on site to manage to maintain his addiction.
However, as the Omelette portal explains, Miguel discovers that the substance is running through his body and returns to the laboratory where he undergoes the genetic procedure to try to prevent the drug’s effect. The attempt is sabotaged by an Alchemax employee, which causes O’Hara’s DNA to be combined with that of a spider.
Surprisingly, Miguel survives, but now he is not just a genius in the field of genetics, as he gains new abilities. They are: claws, fangs, agility, super strength and night vision, in addition to obtaining the ability to self-heal and delay aging.
Now with great powers, O’Hara becomes a vigilante, protecting his reality from villains and especially from Alchemax. To keep his identity a secret, he wears an old Day of the Dead costume, a Mexican holiday established in honor of the deceased – the more than special costume was also adapted for the animated version of the hero in ‘Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse’. See it in the trailer!
