The Twilight saga focuses on the love story between Bella, a human, and Edward, a vampire. However, books written by Stephenie Meyer have several characters who had their stories briefly told.
Among the names that have a very interesting past is Aro, the leader of the Volturi, the most powerful vampire clan in this universe. The character is one of the great antagonists, and was played in the film adaptations by the actor Michael Sheen.
According to the details written by Meyer in the books, Aro was born in 1300 BC, and he’s been ambitious since he was a little boy. He always craved power and, because of that, he is one of the few Twilight characters who became a vampire of his own free will, that is, he was neither attacked nor saved from imminent death. Aro became an immortal being in his early twenties to try to curb his hunger for power.
Already being a vampire, Aro decided to create a clan and summoned Marcus and Caius, who were played in theatersrespectively, by Christopher Heyerdahl It is Jamie Campbell, to join the group. Although the two vampires also craved power, it wasn’t to the same extent as the character from Sheen — and he still could have been one of the most powerful vampires if not for his paranoia.
Aro was always sure that at some point he would be betrayed by people around him, which made him turn against friends and family. The great example of this happened with Didyme, his sister. After establishing his coven, Aro decided to turn his sister into a vampire to support his cause, which was to become the most powerful vampire of all. The antagonist of the saga just didn’t count that Didyme and Marcus would fall in love.
At first, the leader of the Volturi was in favor of the relationship and believed that the clan would be even stronger because of it. However, over time, he realized that the couple was so happy together that they no longer craved power, and had limited their ambition. It was then that his paranoia began to appear: Aro became convinced that, if one day they fell out with Marcus, his sister would side with the beloved and not the brother, because of the relationship between them.
To ensure Marcus’s loyalty, Aro murdered Didyme and hid his partner’s crime, even helping the vampire to look for the person responsible for killing his beloved. From then on, Marcus became more melancholic and more submissive to Aro.
What made Aro forget his sister’s death was the arrival of the twins Alec and Jane to the clan, after saving the brothers from imminent death: they would be burned because of their abilities considered out of the ordinary by the village in which they lived. For this, the young became loyal subjects of the Volturi, as a form of gratitude.
Another interesting point in Aro’s story is that, unlike many vampires in the saga, he didn’t look for an immortal companion, but a human one. The character decided this, because that way he would be able to guarantee complete control over her once he turned her into a vampire. In this way, the leader chose a young woman and courted her before transforming her. However, her paranoia kicked in again, and Aro ended up imprisoning her in the Volturi house and asking a vampire with glamor skills to convince her that she was happy.
Aro also has a brief history with Carlisle, as the leader of the Cullens was a member of the Volturi at one time. This period is resumed with great prominence in the saga and later, there is a great reunion between them to defend the existence of Renesmee.
