One of the most fascinating points about vampires is that they are immortal beings. However, the characters in the Twilight saga often end up describing this immortality as something negative. Even though they don’t like the fact that they live thousands of years, the members of the Cullen clan have experienced great historical moments.
Check out some of the years that marked human history and the characters created by Stephenie Meyer could experience.
1. Ancient Greece (1340 BC)
The oldest period that was referenced in the “Twilight” books is Ancient Greece. That’s because it was in 1340 BC that Aro, the leader of the Volturi, was born. He and his family are considered the oldest vampires in the world, and are of Greek origin.
2. American Civil War (1861 – 1865)
In both books and movies, fans learned that Jasper, played on the big screen by Jackson Rathbonelived intensely the conflicts of the American Civil War, in the USA, between the years 1861 – 1865.
This war began when the southern states of the United States wanted to separate from the rest of the country, with the abolition of slavery being one of the main reasons for the separation. In the plot, Jasper fought alongside the Confederate Army, that is, Alice’s future boyfriend fought for the separation of the southern territory.
In 1863, he was turned by a vampire known as Maria. From that, he started training newborns, to form an army. In the Twilight universe, vampires were also at war. Jasper tells Bella his whole story in the events of “Eclipse”, the third book and film in the franchise.
3. Spanish flu pandemic (1918)

One of the most important historical moments for the plot of Twilight was the Spanish flu pandemic, which had three strong waves between 1918 and 1919. This is because it was during this period that Edward was turned into a vampire by Carlisle.
When he was still human, Edward contracted the Spanish flu. He would be one more of the fatal victims of the virus that, in the real world, caused the death of 50 million people. However, Carlisle decided to turn him into a vampire so that he could survive the pandemic.
4. The Great Depression (1929)
Although not explored much in the books, it was during the Great Depression that Rosalie was born. She came into the world in 1915 and, as a human, she lived through the economic crisis of 1929, the biggest in the history of the United States, which lasted until the mid-1930s.
It is revealed in the story that Rosalie’s family did not suffer much from the crisis, since her father worked in a bank, which helped the family to have good conditions for that time.
