What’s the story behind the ‘Harry Potter’ ghosts that didn’t appear in the movies?

Both in the Harry Potter books and movies, we meet some ghosts that live in Hogwarts. However, the adaptation for the big screen did not show the few details that we have about these spirits in the works created by J.K. Rowling.

Because of this, Recreio brought the story of the ghosts present at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that you did not see in the movies. Look!

Nearly Headless Nick is the ghost who lives in Gryffindor house. When alive, he belonged to the court of King Henry II, and was known as Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington.

He once tried to magically beautify a Muggle, who was also part of the court. Problem is, he caused fangs to pop out of the woman. After this incident, he had his wand confiscated, in addition to being arrested and sentenced to death.

Sir Nicholas died on 31 October 1492, however, it was not a smooth passing. He was executed with a dull axe, taking 45 strokes to cut off his head. Even so, he had an intact nerve left, causing the member to continue, in a strange way, attached to his body. Because of this, he is not accepted among the other headless ghosts.

Among all the ghosts, the least talkative is the one who lives in Ravenclaw. The spirit, known as the Gray Lady, is named Helena Ravenclaw, and is the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the founders of Hogwarts.

In life, Helena tried to outsmart her mother by trying to steal her magic diadem and run away. When Rowena was on the brink of death, she asked the Bloody Baron to bring her daughter back to see her one last time. The founder chose the Baron, because she knew he was passionate and obsessed with Helena, so he wouldn’t rest until he found her.

After finding Helena in a forest in Albania and being rejected by her, the Baron ended up murdering her. When faced with what he did and full of guilt, he committed suicide. The two ended up returning as ghosts to Hogwarts.

The Bloody Baron is the ghost of Slytherin and, when he was alive, he was a student of that house. He never had his love for Helena Ravenclaw reciprocated.

After killing Helena and committing suicide, he returned as a spirit to Hogwarts. He walks around the school all covered in silver stains of blood, which are Helena’s, but only the two of them know it. In addition to the marks on his clothes, he wears chains, as a sign of penance for the crime he has committed.

Fat Friar

The ghost that roams Hufflepuff is Fat Friar. The true name of the spirit is not known, however, it is known that, in life, he attended Hogwarts, and later decided to join the clergy, more specifically in a mendicant religious order.

He was murdered by members of the order who were suspicious of his ability to cure people of smallpox with just a stick, which was actually his wand. Another thing the clergy found strange is that he sometimes ended up pulling rabbits out of the communion cup.

Even the toilets at Hogwarts have ghosts! The Myrtle-Que-Geme is a spirit that haunts one of the girls’ restrooms, which are rarely visited by the students. She herself was a student at the school when she passed away.

On the day she died, Myrtle was hiding in the bathroom, as Olivia Hornby, her arch-rival, made fun of her for her eyes. She was crying and, suddenly, she heard a noise in the place, deciding to find out what it was. When she opened the door to one of the bathroom stalls, she ended up dying.

At the time of Myrtle’s death, people didn’t know what had happened for the girl to die. However, it is later discovered that she looked into the eyes of the basilisk, a creature that was hidden in the Chamber of Secrets, which had the entrance located in the bathroom in which she hid.

Myrtle decided to return as a ghost to Hogwarts to haunt her enemy. However, over the years, she has gained a reputation as the school’s most unfortunate ghost. Often, she was found moaning and wailing in the bathroom in which she died.

There is a ghost at Hogwarts who is only there to create chaos. Known as Peeves, the spirit is actually a poltergeist — a German term that translated means noisy ghost. He has lived at the school since 993, the year Hogwarts was founded.

The ghost is the terror of the janitors. In 1876, after a plan by a staff member at the time to capture him went awry, he began to cause a lot of chaos and threaten the students, which caused the teachers to evacuate the castle for three days. Things only went back to normal after he made a deal with the director, so that he would have some benefits and stop the attacks.

At Hogwarts, almost anything is possible – including taking a class with a ghost. Cuthbert Binns died in his sleep, and simply rose like a ghost to deliver his lecture. Although we don’t know at what age he died, it is known that he was very old. Known as Professor Binns, his appearance is that of an old, wrinkled tortoise, and he teaches the History of Magic discipline.
