During a visit to the University of Manitoba last week, Canada’s Prime Minister was mobbed by a young supporter of the very conservative People’s Party of Canada (PPC).
It’s an exchange that has gone viral in Canada. While visiting the University of Manitoba on Wednesday April 12, Justin Trudeau got into an impromptu debate with a young supporter of the People’s Party of Canada (PPC), a populist party founded in 2018 by Maxime Bernier, who was present at the university.
After discussing access to dental care for poor families, the discussion quickly turned to the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion). “Don’t you think women should be able to choose what to do with their bodies?” asks the Prime Minister of Canada to his interlocutor. The answer from the interested director, who declares himself a “Christian”. “Personally, no. […], because it is their choice to lie left and right.” It is enough to force the head of state to react immediately. “Wow…Wow…” she exclaimed, before reaffirming women’s right to choose abortion, especially in cases of rape. “Looks like we need to think a little more and pray a little more about this,” Justin Trudeau finally began, somewhat sarcastically. The footage has since been retweeted thousands of times.
Many Internet users took the Prime Minister’s side on social networks. “All the more reason to see Trudeau as an excellent leader (…) And all the more reason to be concerned about PPC followers and entrenched misogyny.” wrote one Mary Dixon on Twitter. When? adds another “The Prime Minister was respectful and spoke directly to the young man who clearly benefited from the exchange. He admits he needs to take a closer look. Voters should know exactly what they believe.”
An ardent defender of abortion rights
This is not the first time that Justin Trudeau has defended the right to abortion. A year ago, as the US Supreme Court prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade (a seminal case law dating back to 1973 that legalized abortion in the United States), the liberal leader vowed to defend abortion rights. “A woman’s free choice is a choice that only she can make. Every woman in Canada has the right to a legal and safe abortion,” she told the press at the time. Then add: “We need to make sure there are safeguards in place so that we never (…) get this right back.”
The Supreme Court of Canada decriminalized abortion in a landmark 1988 ruling. In fact, abortion is thus presented as a medical act like any other, even if there are concrete barriers to access, especially for people living outside urban areas.
