Meet the version of Aladdin’s best friend you never imagined, and was discarded by Disney
In the animation “Aladdin”, by disneyone of the characters most loved by the public is Abu, the adorable little monkey who is the protagonist’s best friend and is by his side at all times, regardless of what happens.
During the film, he is represented as a very faithful and smart animal, who is always attentive to everything — especially when he sees a shiny object in order to steal it. However, as reflected by the ScreenRant portal, the initial production version had a very different Abu than what we are used to.
Abu human?
As revealed by the director john muskerduring the initial drafts, Abu would not be a cute monkey, but an older man, responsible for helping Aladdin in his thefts for Agrabbah to survive.
The idea, however, ended up being discarded after the production team realized that there were too many humans for an animated feature, and decided to add more animals. This is how Iago, Jafar’s parrot, Rajah, Jasmine’s tiger, and Abu, Aladdin’s best friend, appeared.
Abu in real life
Have you ever wondered what Abu would look like in real life? The character was inspired by the Capuchin Monkey, an animal typical of Central and South America, which can be found in countries such as Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, in the Amazon region of Venezuela and, possibly, in Colombia.
Just like in the animation, these little animals are also small in size, but with great intelligence. In addition, they are not very heavy, have a long tail, and long and dense fur, with colors that vary between dark brown, black, red and yellow.
As explained by the Evandro Chagas Institute, because they are ornivorous animals, they basically feed on small vertebrates, fruits, insects and seeds. Their reproduction is quite different from that of humans. A gestation lasts only 155 days (approximately 5 months), and only one calf is born.
