Stephen Colbert marked the arrest and first court appearance of former President Donald Trump as a felony defendant on Tuesday.
“Once he finally got downtown to the courthouse, I heard these immortal words: ‘Right now, 1:24 p.m. Eastern time, Donald J. Trump has been arrested,'” Colbert said, using a clip from CNN . “I know. That’s great, but remember, he’s innocent until proven guilty, so.”
“At that point, of course, he was read his Miranda rights,” Colbert continued. “Then he claimed Miranda wasn’t even his type, asked her to sign an NDA, and was charged again.”
Colbert then showed footage of Trump, who pleaded not guilty to charges related to paying porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 before the 2016 presidential election, he walked into court – and no one was holding the door when he closed it behind him.
“Wow, that’s something special,” Colbert said. “It’s not often you see a door kick ass when you walk in.”
Colbert noted that pundits predicted an “angry MAGA mob” would sweep the city to protest Trump’s arrest. But that didn’t happen, he said, pointing to an Intelligencer story that reported “there were so few pro-Trump protesters that reporters had to … line up to talk to them.”
“It’s never a good sign when there are fewer people at your current rally than are in jail for your last one,” Colbert joked.
