How did Pluto come about?

Have you ever wondered what race the Puto was? Or did you know that, in the beginning, he wasn’t Mickey’s pet? Many people don’t know the origin story of one of Disney’s classic characters. Therefore, Recreio will tell you how this charismatic dog came to be.

Emergence

Pluto is a bloodhund dog, and had his first appearance in 1930, in the short entitled “The Picninc”, where he was Minnie’s pet and went by the name of Rover. The curious thing is that he made a double debut: in the same year, he appeared as a hunting dog in the short film “Gangue de Cadeias”. walt disney would have liked the character so much, that he decided to insert him in more stories.

It is only in the short film “The Moose Hunt”, released in 1931, that Pluto becomes Mickey’s pet and, in the same story, gains the name we know today. In season, walt disney thought of several nicknames for the character, such as Pal and Homer the Hound, but decided to pay homage to the historic discovery of that year: the planet Pluto.

After numerous appearances in Mickey’s adventures, Pluto begins to have his own stories, such as “Just Dogs” (in free translation, Just Dogs), which aired in 1931. The dog was also the only one of Mickey’s gang to have a animated series, the “Silly Symphony, Mother Pluto”, from 1936. In 1937, Pluto is featured in the short film “Quin-puplets”, in which he has a love interest, the Pekingese Fifi, with whom he has 5 puppies.

But he didn’t just stick with his own stories and Mickey’s. During their first appearances, walt disney felt that Pluto’s personality and Donald’s temperament were a good match, and thought that the characters could make a good pair. Thus, in some drawings, Pluto appeared as Donald Duck’s pet.

After having participated in more than 100 productions, including films and shorts, Pluto also received awards! Despite certainly preferring snacks, the dog won an Oscar in the category of Best Short Animation in 1941, for the short film “Lend a Paw” (in Portuguese, it is known as “Me Dá Uma Pata”. He also received, in 1942, the “Boscar”, an award for being the most promising dog actor of the year.

These days, Pluto remains firm and strong alongside his best friend and is always present in productions where the whole Mickey gang is present.
