Understand why Goofy and Pluto don’t act the same despite being so similar
In existence for over 90 years, Goofy, the goofy, kind-hearted dog who is commonly described as Mickey Mouse’s best friend, has a number of characteristics that are unlike another canine that holds a special place in the heart of the most beloved mouse among Disney characters. Disney: Pluto, the yellow dog who always gets into trouble.
This is because, unlike Pluto, Goofy walks on two legs, wears clothes, and even speaks, things the other animated dog cannot do, as he appears as Mickey’s beloved pet.
Even though the two are dogs and belong to the same breed (Bloodhound), why does Goofy talk and Pluto doesn’t? What is the reason for such distinction?
SOLVING THE MYSTERY
The doubt was clarified by Superinteressante magazine in 2011, through a statement by the journalist Roberto Elisio dos Santosprofessor at Centro Universitário Municipal de São Caetano do Sul (SP), who stated that this occurs due to a small and important detail: the dynamics established by walt disney.
In the fantastic stories created by the illustrator, filmmaker, screenwriter, director, voice actor, animator and philanthropist, the animals that occupy the position of protagonists, or main characters, are made to assume an anthropomorphic look, so they must look and act like human beings, even if in some situations, the choice does not seem to make much sense.
Mickey, for example, has appeared hunting ducks even though he is Donald’s friend. And Horácio, who is a horse with human habits, participated in a plot riding a horse. In cartoons, this type of character represents a caricature of the human being, a compromise between man and animal”, explained Roberto Elísio dos Santos.
It is worth remembering that the characters were already presented following this pre-established logic, since when he was presented in ‘Mickey’s Revue’ in 1932, Goofy was presented as a friend of Mickey and Donald, while Pluto was presented in ‘The Chain Gang’ as a ordinary dog, until he was adopted by Minnie, earning his unforgettable name and becoming the beloved pet of mickey.
