Girls’ health is affected by temperature during pregnancy, a new study has found

Published in a journal JAMA Network Open This new study by scientists from Insern, University of Grenoble and CNRS highlights the impact of global warming especially on the health of our babies and girls.

Inequality between girls and boys is rooted before birth and depends on the climate context, according to new research. Published in a journal JAMA Network Open This indicates that temperature will indeed have a detrimental effect on infants depending on their gender. Thus, baby girls who were exposed to extremely extreme climates during their mother’s pregnancy—very high or very low temperatures—had reduced breathing capacity a few weeks after giving birth.

On the video: baby boom or child accident. Has Covid-19 really caused France’s birth rate to drop?

This new study, conducted by scientists from Insern, the University of Grenoble and the CNRS, on 343 women and their children was carried out in a region where the lowest temperature is below 1 degree and the highest is more than 24 degrees. Its purpose? Analyze the effects of air pollution on infant health. Six to seven weeks after birth, the researchers looked at tidal volume, respiratory rate, and the volume of air left in the lungs after exhalation.

It has no pathological nature

Result: the differences between girls and boys are clear. Female babies exposed to extreme temperatures from the second trimester of pregnancy have less air in their lungs, while their breathing rates are higher. On the contrary, temperature does not seem to affect the health of male children in any way. “The observed variations are not pathological in nature and do not predict future respiratory distress, but the various pulmonary function measurements performed are consistent with the association between exposure to high or low intrauterine temperatures in the little girl. and worse lung function in infants.”, concluded Johanna Lepeul, at the start of the study, as reported by several media outlets.

A new analysis should appear soon. This time it will be conducted on children between 3 and 8 years old, with the aim of finding out if these changes are long-term and irreversible. At the same time, Johanna Lepel raises an important point. “the results underscore the importance of developing public policies to protect pregnant women and their babies from extreme temperatures, especially in the current context of global warming.”
