The dark version of Woody that was scrapped from Toy Story

In the early versions of Toy Story, Woody had a very different personality than we know. Know more!

Knowing Woody for 28 years, it’s extremely difficult to imagine what it would be like if the beloved cowboy from “Toy Story” had a different personality and acted like a villain – but that, in fact, almost happened.

As found by the ScreenRant portal, during the beginning of the film’s development, the producers’ idea was to present Woody as the great villain of the franchise. In early drafts, the cowboy is portrayed as a tyrant responsible for leading the toys from Andy’s room, and who gets even more evil after Buzz’s arrival.

During the storyboards, scenes also appear where Woody purposely pushes the space patrolman out of the window so that he is no longer around, in addition to frequently shouting at the porcelain doll Bo Peep, his romantic partner in the version we know, and the dog with springs Slinky. Also, initially, the cowboy would not be a common rag doll, but a ventriloquist, having an even more intimidating appearance.

Why was the villainous Woody dropped?

As reported by ScreenRant, the dark and villainous version of Woody came about after a wish by the president to Jeffrey KatzenbergDisney president at the time, who asked for the film to be more adult, and ended up being discarded after a meeting with studio executives in November 1993, who would have hated everything that was presented.

With the first version barred, Pixar producers were given a two-week deadline to fix the entire film, including story and characters, or else the feature would be canceled. However, what Disney executives least expected is that they managed to deliver a new plot in the stipulated time, and today we have the “Toy Story” we know.

In 1995, the world was introduced to the story of Woody, Buzz and their friends, becoming an immediate success. Currently, only the first film grossed more than $394.4 million at the worldwide box office, while “Toy Story 2” has $512 million, “Toy Story 3” with $1.067 billion, and “Toy Story 4” with US$ 1.073 billion.

In February of this year, Pixar confirmed the production of the fifth film in the franchise, which still does not have a release date. Second Pete Doctor, studio head, “When we made the first Toy Story, we had no idea there was going to be Toy Story 2. We were just trying to make this movie. But when finished, it takes you to unexpected places, which is what I love about the creative process. If I knew exactly what I was doing when I started making a film, it wouldn’t make sense to do it. I discover a lot along the way. It has some really fun stuff. [em Toy Story 5] that you haven’t seen before.”
