In addition to the series, discover the information disclosed about Anna in the games and comics of ‘The Last of Us’
Last Sunday night, the 12th, ‘The Last Us’ fans were able to get more details about Ellie’s origin and what made her immune to Cordyceps. However, the entire narrative was only made possible by one character: Anna, the mother of the girl who may hold the key to curing the mutation that almost wiped out humanity.
Although the final episode of the series brings Anna’s first physical appearance in all products of the franchise, there are mentions and references to her in the games and comics as well, which provide more information about Ellie’s mother’s past. Check them all out below!
Anna’s story
The first mention of Anna in the game appears in ‘The Last of Us Part I’, in the chapter ‘Resort à Beira do Lago’, where it is possible to access the collectibles that are stored in Ellie’s backpack, and among them, is the letter from farewell to the girl’s mother.
The text, which was written on the same date of birth as Ellie and before Anna’s death, reveals that the girl was given to Marlene (leader of the Fireflies), as she is the person Anna trusts most in the world. Read in full!
Ellie,
I’ll let you in on a secret, I’m not a big fan of kids and I hate babies. Still… I look at you and I’m amazed. You don’t have a day to live, and holding you is the most amazing thing I’ve ever done in my life, a life that’s about to be cut short before its time.
Marlene will take care of you. There is no one in this world that I trust more than her. When the time comes, she’ll tell you all about me. Don’t make things too difficult for her. Try not to be stubborn like me. Not gonna lie, this is a pretty chaotic world. It will not be easy. What you must always remember is that life is worth it! Find your purpose and fight for it. I see so much strength in you. I know you will become the woman you are meant to be.
Forever… your mother, who loves you,
Anna.
Make me proud, Ellie!”
Already in ‘Left Behind’, the expansion of the first ‘The Last of Us’, Ellie asks Riley what Marlene had already said about her mother. Riley responds that she doesn’t know much, just that the two were friends even before the Cordyceps mutation occurred, and that Ellie’s mother was a nurse.
Reinforcing all the points about Anna revealed so far, the ‘American Dreams’ comics show the meeting of Marlene and Ellie, where the leader of the Fireflies reveals that she and Anna were great friends, and that before dying, Ellie’s mother had asked that the girl be kept safe, justifying why she ended up in the Boston Quarantine Zone along with FEDRA.
In addition, it is at this moment that Ellie has access to the letter seen in the first game of the series, because during the explanation, Marlene hands Anna’s knife and letter to the girl, revealing that there is still much to say about Anna on another occasion. .
Finally, in the HBO series, it is possible to understand the context of the letter and the reason why it was written. That’s because, during episode 9 titled ‘Search for the Light’, Anna, runs away from an infecting while going into labor. Trying to bring her daughter into the world safely, the woman enters an abandoned house, where she should receive help from her best friend, Marlene (the leader of the Fireflies), and her allies, but instead, she finds herself alone.
Even trying to hide, the creature finds it. After being attacked, she manages to kill the infected, giving birth to Ellie moments later. However, during the struggle, she ends up getting bitten on the thigh, something she only realizes after she already has Ellie in her arms, causing her to desperately cut the umbilical cord.
When Marlene finally arrives, Anna tells her friend that the girl was born before the bite, and asks Marlene to take her to safety. Seeing her condition, Anna also begs her friend to kill her before her nervous system is completely controlled by the fungus, requests that Marlene grants after so much reluctance.
Curiosity: In the ‘Uncharted 4’ epilogue, players can check out a ‘The Last of Us: American Daughters’ poster in Nathan Drake and Elena’s daughter’s bedroom. The figure shows a pregnant woman wearing a gas mask and carrying a gun, which Neil Druckmannco-creator of the game, confirmed that it was Anna, as reported by Jovem Nerd.
