Chris Rock’s live show on Netflix was not without an edit of the taped version of the special, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Rock, who filmed the “Selective Outrage” special last weekend, went all-in on Will Smith after a long period of silence regarding the “Fresh Prince” actor’s infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars.
The comedian, however, did not get one of Jada Pinkett Smith’s jokes accurate, leading to the joke being cut from a taped version of the special posted on the streaming platform.
“Years ago, his wife said I should quit the Oscars — I shouldn’t have hosted because her man wasn’t nominated for ‘Emancipation,’ the greatest piece of shit ever. No, not ‘Emancipation,’ just kidding,” Rock from his 2016 Oscar concert. But he was referring to Smith’s film “Concussion.”
Rock was aware of the subsequent editing, according to the Hollywood Reporter. After initially stumbling, he bounced back during the live special.
“She started this shit. She said that I, a bastard of a grown man, should quit my job because “my husband wasn’t nominated for ‘Concussion,'” Rock said, referring to a past ceremony that Pinkett Smith boycotted it amid the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.
The Rock special arrived on Sunday just before this year’s Academy Awards.
Smith slammed Rock on stage last year after the comedian made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s alopecia. The actor reportedly tried “unsuccessfully” to clean up his friendship with Rock after the slap.
A source told People that Smith is “better, but still sorry” because his family has “helped him look inward and mature” over the past year.
