Mickey Mouse should have another name; discover the story

Find out which name was thought to give title to Disney’s most beloved mouse: Mickey Mouse

Making his first appearance in the 1920s, the animated mouse who wears white gloves, red shorts and yellow shoes known as Mickey Mouse, has gathered over the years several films, comics, TV cartoons and various licensed products, making making him one of the great Disney icons.

The character’s popularity is so great that his round ears can be recognized even by a glimpse by anyone following the studio’s narratives, and that his name is never mistaken, as the high-pitched voice of the little mouse introducing himself as Mickey Mouse is hard to forget.

However, what some may not know is that the most beloved mouse of all time could be part of the plots produced by the studio created by waltz disneyand from the imagination of lovers of animated narratives in another way, since, originally, it should have been called by a completely different name.

Name change?

Appearing on the big screen for the first time through the short ‘Vapor Willie’ (film that marked the debut of Disney’s shorter films in theaters), released on November 18, 1928, the popular mouse should be presented as Mortimer and not like Mickey Mouse.

The change of the name by which we know it today took place, as the wife of walt disney, Liliandisapproved of the idea and suggested that the husband change the name of the mouse to Michael Theodore Mouse, or just his nickname, Mickey Mouse.

It is also worth mentioning that the popular little mouse that was designed by waltz and by the animator ub Iwerks, is called differently in certain countries, that’s because, he had his name translated into some languages, starting to be called Topolino in Italian, Mick Maus in German; Raton Mickey in Spanish; Mousse Pigg in Swedish and Mi Lao Shu in Mandarin.

Mickey Mouse’s Journey

Mickey Mouse’s debut in ‘Vapor Willie’, was performed in black and white and still without lines, a fact that changed in 1929 with the release of the short film “The Karnival”, where he uttered his first words: “Hot Dog ” and in 1935, in ‘The Band Concert’, a film that marked the first appearance of the mouse in color.

Initially, Mickey was voiced by walt disney. The voice remained the same until 1946 and in 1977, that’s when Walt hired Wayne Allwine to voice Mickey.

Despite the huge success, Mickey Mouse was not Disney’s first bet on a feature film, since the person who achieved the feat was ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, a film that hit the big screen in 1937 — but, it was just a question of time for the mouse’s turn to arrive, since three years later he became the protagonist of ‘Fantasia’, in 1940.

In addition, the first production of the character for TV was carried out in 1950, with the Christmas special “One Hour in Wonderland”, while his first book appeared shortly after his first film, in 1930.

Finally, it is worth highlighting that Mickey’s 50th birthday present was a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, a fact that made him the first character to achieve the feat.
