Two friends fell in love with a property in Yonne. Their bias is to make the ideal summer house available for rent. Keep what you have by adding antiques, artwork, and contemporary furniture.
And inside, charming decor designed to be found in peace and tranquility. Morocco House
A house is always a story: of a couple, of a family, of meetings, of style… La Maison Maroc was built with love. Legend, which appears to be true, says that it was ordered in 1920 by a Mexican, who no one knows how or why, at Yon Saint-Sauveur Station. A heartbeat for the region. In the heart of the forest, away from prying eyes, he acquires a magnificent piece of land and builds a house there for his beloved wife. He will never live there. For what ? The mystery is intact. Who was he? No one can tell. Some argue that it would have been Moroccan, which would explain the foyer giving rise to a minaret extending from the roof of the building. It would also be a clue to understanding the name given to the place by the Mexican owner: Moroccan Forest. Its much-marked 1920s architecture, all rounded and arabesque, its interior staircase illuminated by a grand glass roof, its magnificent cement tiles have magically survived the decades.

Its untouched charm undoubtedly explains the immediate love that Kanel Gendron and Caroline Houdart had in 2021, two friends who were looking for a place to create an ideal country house surrounded by nature, to rent a coco to keep you away from the hustle and bustle. the world Surrounded by a two-hectare park planted with hundred-year-old trees, Maison Maroc is the perfect refuge where good vibes float. That’s why Caroline and Canele decided not to dwell on the past. On the contrary, they chose to preserve it, to bring it to life. It obviously needs some work and they have worked carefully on the finish. They display works by artists that are also for sale, such as some accessories and furniture. A tour in their company in this welcoming home where you immediately want to put down your bags.
the entrance
The entrance, lit by a glass roof, already had several beautiful features, including magnificent cement tiles on the floor. Morocco House
“Everything was there. The light falling from the luxurious glass roof, the very beautiful cement tiles, which were in perfect condition. What we did is a joke. We put on a coat of paint to keep it clean and removed the carpet that was hiding the wood on the stair treads. This charming entrance serves the living room, dining room, and kitchen. »
Living room
In the living room, artwork and modern furniture, vintage pieces are perfectly combined with original elements such as the fireplace and its mirror. Morocco House
“You can access it through the entryway, but it also connects to the dining room, which is L-shaped, and that’s where we kept everything. A marble fireplace with its bronze details and its mirror. Hungarian dot parquet, which we have just renovated. We also liked the moldings that we reproduced on the walls where they were missing. We still brought in a personal touch, the color, with a pretty blue from Resources, which also seems like a common thread on the first floor. Because we wanted visitors to feel better in this house than at home, we installed sofas, very comfortable poufs, a Moldavian rug from Bohemian Chic Interior that we fell in love with, pillows from Jamini. The mind is voluntary mix and match With many pieces found in Morocco, Bel-Île and around the house. »
Dining room
Connecting with the living room, the dining room is an invitation to gather together. Morocco House
“It can be accessed from the entrance or from the living room. We have done some work in this room. The part that we can see from the entrance is the second kitchen, which is in a bad condition, we chose to remove it so that it communicates with the dining room, all attached to the living room. Result: we have a room of almost 40 m², which has a transmissive light. To frame it, we found a beautiful chest of drawers, and a large wooden table found at Atmosphere d’Ailleurs adds warmth and a friendly atmosphere. »
The kitchen
There was already a very beautiful piano in the kitchen and it served as a starting point for the decoration of the room. Morocco House
To add cachet to the kitchen, Caroline and Kanel took a beautiful dresser and added a Smeg refrigerator with retro lines. Morocco House
“It’s really surprising, but this kitchen was in excellent condition. The grand piano was already there, the cement tiles on the floor were flawless. Even the color of the walls was perfect. It must be said that it was the most recent creation. The piano was the starting point for several investments we made. We took the same colored pantry, added a Smeg fridge… We kept the spirit and to be honest we did very little to inject the cachet. »
The rooms

The master bedroom, like all the bedrooms on the first floor, has a fireplace… It’s not working for safety reasons, but it’s great. Morocco House

The children love the hostel – they christened it “paradise”. Morocco House
“The rooms on the first floor all have a beautiful fireplace, which is not working for safety reasons, unlike the room downstairs. Not much work has been done in these rooms. We’ve even splurged on their timeless side and their fabrics on the wall that we’ve kept. It is from these textiles that we thought of the decoration. For example, the Soie room, as its name suggests, was dressed in beautiful silks patterned in shades of blue. It is from this nuance that we chose the upholstery fabrics for benches, curtains, and also bed linen. We had the same approach to Raffia’s room. Also on this floor is the Master bedroom, the largest, with direct access to one of the bathrooms. on the 2nde floor, more work needed to be done, we moved the partitions to optimize the space. On this level is the smallest bedroom in the house, which is also the most romantic. Its special feature is that it has access to the top of the tower, which makes this house special. A bit like the bedroom of the newlyweds, the lovers, the nest.
The home’s belvedere is a space open to nature to read, watch, meditate or have an aperitif. Morocco House
The Belvedere is completely open to nature. We have furnished it with a wicker sofa for reading, relaxing, looking at the trees and the garden or having an aperitif. There is also a dormitory on the second floor, a kind of children’s paradise. Under the roof, with small windows, it looks like a cabin, in which we have planned games and books. With its old trunks, its colorful coat racks, the atmosphere is deliberately more 70’s. »
Bathrooms
A little vintage look for this yellow bathroom. Morocco House
A magnificent mosaic already graced the wall and tub of this bathroom overlooking the garden. Morocco House
“They were also in very good condition. Only the bathroom next to the Raffia bedroom has been renovated. However, we kept the large sink with the vintage-looking faucet. We’ve hunted down china racks and coat racks to keep the slightly retro spirit that’s everywhere. There is also a bathroom on this floor with an incredible mosaic and beautiful original tiles. The room is fantastic with a large window allowing you to shower or bathe with a garden view. We made some changes, replacing the hardware that was a bit too typical of the 1960s and 70s with more refined elements such as handles or a custom-designed large oval mirror that adds a lot of personality to the room. Obviously, we searched for furniture such as a beautiful chest of drawers, towel racks. This mosaic bathroom is accessible from the hallway and master bedroom. Finally, the third bathroom, located on the second floor, had to undergo some significant work. Indeed, the original room was the one that gave access to the lighthouse and was equipped with a telescopic ladder to climb up there. We removed this staircase, closed the ceiling, split it to create a bathroom with a large sink and shower. »
The garden
Two hectares of gardens and centuries-old trees form a protective cocoon around Maison Maroc. Morocco House
In good weather, tranquility and nature invite you to set a table under the windows of the house. Morocco House
“It is magnificent with its centuries-old trees, cedars and redwoods. This park is very famous in the area. So we want to restore it to its former glory. The previous owners had animals that did significant damage to the plants. That’s why there are no flowers. “For the past year we’ve been working with a landscaper whose father worked there to make the garden even more beautiful.”
